The relationship between managerial competence level of head nurses and job satisfaction of nurses

Abstract (EN)

Introduction and Aim: There is a significant effect of successful management and managers on administration of human resources which is the backbone of management. This research was conducted to determine the relationship between the level of managerial competence of head nurses and job satisfaction of nurses. Material and Method: This descriptive and cross sectional research was conducted with nurses serving for state hospitals in the province of Ordu, between October in 2017 and June in 2019. While 717 nurses and 95 unit head nurses serving at said hospitals constituted the population of this research, the sample consisted of 273 nurses and 91 unit head nurses satisfying the criteria of sampling. The data was collected by using ''Self-Description Form'', ''Job Satisfaction Scale'', "Service Head Nurse Performance Rating Scale" through distribution and reclaim of surveys by the researcher. The data was analysed by using number, percentage, mean, standard deviation, median; t test, one way analysis of variance; Mann Whitney-U test, Kruskal Wallis analysis and correlation analysis were used. Results: As a result of the study it was stated that among the head nurses included in the study %74.7 was women; %52.7 of them was the age sacale of 32-40; %59,3 of them was bachelor; %53.8 of them had 1-3 years managment experience and they considered they were managerially sufficient (X=4.06±0.62); it was determened that manner of work and having a child affect the level of managment competence (p<0.05). On the other hand, it was stated that among the nurses included in the research, %82.1 of them was women, %27.1 of them was at the age scale of 34-40, %48.7 of them was bachelor, %35.5 of them had 1-6 years management experience and their job satisfaction was low (X=2.93±0.69); it was also determined that work manners and duration of working in the same service affect job satisfaction (p<0.05). The opposite and significant but very weak relations was determined between nurses level of management competence and their job satisfaction (p<0.05). Conclusion: It was stated that job satisfaction of nurses was low; nurses evalute head nurses as component regarding their own perception, there is an opposite significant but very weak relations between nurses level of job satisfaction and their level of management competence. With the light of these results; regulations to increase nurses job satisfaction precations tor ise the management competence of head nurses and representation of them in the work place can be adviced.
