The anatomy of the civil war: From former Yugoslavia to Bosnia - Herzegovina

The aim of the thesis is to understand why the project of multiculturalism constructed in Tito period that can be read as the transformation of the Ottoman Millet System to universal socialist citizenship in Bosnia Herzigovina resulted in an intrastate war in 1990s and enactment of the Dayton Peace Agreement did not function. The argument of the thesis is patterned on the fact that although Bosnian, Croatian and Serbian ethnicities had relatively lived in peace in short term in history they reconstructed their ethnic walls against each other by means of domestic and international dynamics. The first section of the study focuses on the concept of ethnicity and analyses the relationship between related concepts such as ethnicity, race and nationalism. The second section evaluates the backstage of the antagonistic positions of the Serbian, Croatian and Bosnian ethnicities. Regarding the fact that the study argues that the Bosnian war was an outcome of an ancient hatreds. The third section discuses the Dayton Peace Agreement and its results and effects in the country by means of observation and the oral History of people experienced the war. The dissertation argues that the Dayton, nevertheless, brings peace in short term it led to sharpening ethnic nationalism, insufficiency of state and the parliamentary system. This makes Dayton dysfunctional in this process that frozen war is strongly felt under the grounds of multiculturalism.
