ABSTRACT Master Thesis AN ANALYSIS OF ERYTHROCYTE MEMBRANE PROTEINS OF INDIVIDUALS WORKING IN AND LIVING NEAR THE HIGH VOLTAGE POWERLINE USING SDS POLYACRYLAMIDE GEL DISK ELECTROPHORESIS METHOD Can PAKSU Institute of Social Sciences University of GAZİANTEP Department of Biophysics Supervisor: Assisstant Prof. Dr. Nurten ERDAL June 1997 -60 Page To analyse the effects of electromagnetic field on the erythrocyte membrane proteins of people working in and living near high voltage powerlines, the blood with heparine samples were obtained from 30 workmen working in 380 kV substations, 30 women living in the dwellings in the same area and 30 healty men and women. Erythrocyte membrane proteins obtained from these samples were compared to that of healthy individuals by using 'SDS Polyacrylamide Gel Disk Electrophoresis' method. While signifigant increases were being observed in the percentage of Spectrin I- II. Protein Band 3, Protein Band 4.2, Protein Band 7, and Protein Band 6, significant decreases were observed in the percentage of Ankyrin, Protein Band 4.1 and Hemoglobin bands of erythrocyte membrane proteins in men. No significant difference were found in the percentage of Protein Band 4.9 ve Actin. In women participants significant increases in the percentage of Protein Band 4.2, Actin and Protein Band 6 were observed. The significant decreases in the percentage of Hemoglobin band in same women group were found too. No significant difference were found in the percentage of Spectrin Ml, Ankyrin, Protein Band 3, Protein Band 4.1, Protein Band 4.9, Protein Band 7. Key Words: Electromagnetic Field, Electrophoresis, erythrocyte Membrane Protein
