Evaluation of the lettering-typography courses in higher education institutions

The objective of this study is to reveal the views of the students and instructors on the lettering-typography courses in higher education institutions providing graphics education. The content of the lettering and typography courses, the names of the courses, semesters, weekly course hours, credits, whether they are elective or compulsory and the condition of the workshops used. It has been attempted to reveal and evaluate what the views of the teachers and students on the content of and student interest on the course and whether there is significant difference between these views.The study universe of the research consisted of the lecturers and students in the graphics design departments of the fine arts faculties of the four universities in Ankara; the department of the universities being Bilkent University Fine Arts Design and Architecture Faculty Graphics Design Department, Gazi University Fine Arts Faculty Visual Communication Design Department, Hacettepe University Fine Arts Faculty Graphics Department and Başkent University Fine Arts Design and Architecture Faculty Fine Arts and Design Department.Descriptive method has been used in this study. A survey has been developed as the data collection means and applied to 105 students and 20 lecturers. The Cronbach alpha reliability of the survey is ( ??????? .%, f, and Mann-whitney U tests have been used in the statistical analysis of data in line with the sub-goals of the research.In accordance with the findings obtained as a result of the study, it has been found out that the teachers and students use classical methods as well as making designs in digital media and that the students prefer digital media design more than the teachers. It has been noticed that majority of both students and teachers agree that the students don?t obtain sufficient education-training of lettering-typography that meets the market expectations. Most of the students think that weekly hours of the lettering and typography courses are not sufficient for them to have sufficient background while teachers disagree that. Teachers think that the workshop atmosphere and equipment used in the lettering-typography courses are motivating to the course and students think that atmosphere and equipment are insufficient to motivate to the course. Most of the students witnessed while they conducted their traineeship that the background they had in the lettering-typography courses were not enough in the market, but teachers disagreed. Students thought that the weekly hours of the lettering-typography courses were not enough, but again teachers disagreed. Students believed that the lack of laboratories that are free to use other than the course hours is one of the reason why they are disqualified in the letter-typography field, however teachers did not have the same view.Keywords: Lettering, Typography, Graphics Education, Graphics Art, Lettering Education, Typography Education, Lettering-Typography.
