n ABSTRACT Master Thesis Treatment of Wastewatres Containing High Organic Matter in Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB) Reactors Sibel ASLAN Fırat University Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences Department of Environmental Engineering 2002, Page : 77 Upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactors, has gradually applied for the treatment of high-strength wastewaters from various industries, such as food/beverage, distillery and agriculture. They don't need a mechanical mixing and a settling unit outside reactor, and their investment costs are relatively less than other anaerobic treatment systems, and their constructions are very simple. Because of their effectiveness, low of investment and operating costs, and easy to operate has become very popular in especially developing countries. In this study, it was used two reactors with the same kind and size. A synthetic wastewater was continuously recirculated throughout acclimation period. pH, COD, TKN, TP, TS, VS, SS, and alkalinity experiments were done in the samples from influent and effluent of reactors. pH, MLSS, MLVSS and alkalinity experiments in the samples from sample ports were also done. It was investigated removal efficiency obtained for various organic loading, hydraulic loading and hydraulic retention times, and it was measured amount of produced CH4 gas. At the same time, it was investigated influence of these parameters on gas-solid-liquid separation, and optimal conditions for the best gas- solid-liquid separation.
