Students and instructors opinions about relative and absolute evaluation in higher education

In this research it is aimed to determine student?s and instructor?s opinions about relative and absolute evaluation in higher education institution.In the research survey method has been used. The research has been carried out by using questionnaire technique on 809 students and 97 instructors in Fırat University. In consequence of the applied questionnaire, the student?s and instructor?s opinions about relative and absolute evaluation have been evaluated by using percentage, frequency and chi-square statitstical processes. In consequence of the research the findings below have been obtained.1.Despite the fact that information levels are the same, it has come out that the grades of the students on whom relative evaluation have been applied, are higher than the students on whom absolute evaluation have been applied.2.It has come out that while students and instructors liken relative evaluation to ?horse racing?, they liken absolute evaluation to ? ratio-scaled meters? and ? teacher?s conscience system. ?3.It has been seen that while students and instructors support that the most positive side of relative evaluation is raising hardworking student?s grades, they support that the most negative side of it is finishing collaboration and increasing competition.4.It has been seen that while students and teachers support that the most positive side of absolute evaluation is providing collaboration among students, they support that the most negative side of it is providing an unfair evaluation opportunity for tutorials whose knowledge of measurement and evaluation are weak.In conclusion it has been seen that both of the evaluation styles have advantages and disadvantages and universities should pay attention to these while choosing evaluation styles. Moreover, the unfairness originating from different evaluation styles of universities should be removed.Key Words: Relative evaluation, Absolute evaluation, Higher Education,
