Opinions on the implementation of a micro-credential system in higher education and a micro-credential application

Traditional higher education systems are struggling to adapt quickly enough to the changes of this age, resulting in significant skill gaps among graduates and inadequacies in meeting the requirements of lifelong learning. This study addresses the need for flexible, modular, and personalized learning models in response to the rapidly changing skill demands of the modern era, focusing on the applicability of the micro-credential system in Turkish higher education. The research was conducted in two phases using a mixed-methods approach. In the first phase, qualitative data were collected through interviews with various stakeholders, including learners, faculty members, and policymakers, to identify perceptions and expectations regarding the micro-credential system. These findings guided the design of a micro-credential-based course. In the second phase, the designed course was implemented, and participant feedback was collected through online surveys and focus group discussions to evaluate its effectiveness and relevance. The findings highlight that micro-credential system holds significant potential in bridging the skills gap and supporting lifelong learning. However, regulatory frameworks and institutional commitment are necessary to ensure their success. This research contributes practical insights into the design, implementation, and evaluation processes of micro-credentials.
