Elevated greenways: Comparison of between Promenade Plantee (Fransa) and High Line (Amerika) examples

The accelerated evolution of urbanization is one of the most important social events affecting the entire planet. And in developing countries, urban growth rates are particularly intense. It has recently been stated that the majority of the world's population will live in urban environments. Urbanization dramatically changes the way people live, their places of work, their homes, and often the quality of the water they drink and the air they breathe. At the same time, urbanization has brought many environmental, social, and economic problems. It is clear that the existing problems in urban areas will worsen if measures are not taken. With its environmental, economic, and social benefits, the concept of the greenway plays an important role in solving problems related to urbanization and industrialization. GreenWay; Natural corridors such as rivers, ridges or valleys, canals converted for recreational use along the railway route, scenic roads or parks, natural reserve areas, cultural objects, or historical settlements are linear corridors connecting each other and settlement areas. Recreational greenways, one of the greenway types, can be a solution to many urban problems. Being able to be built around natural corridors or man-made corridors (canals and abandoned or active railways) offers important options in terms of planning and design. Within the scope of this study, first of all, the emergence and development of greenways were examined and the basic concepts related to greenways were examined. Then, High Line (America) and Promenade Plantee (France) were compared as exemplary applications in which railway routes that lost their function for various reasons were rearranged and brought into use. The common and different aspects of these examples in terms of planning design have been revealed. In this context, suggestions are presented to guide other applications to be made.
