An investigation of Turkish and Turkish culture textbooks (6th, 7th and 8th levels) prepared for bilingual Turkish children living abroad in the context of root values in the 2019 Turkish curriculum of the Ministry of National Education

The aim of this study is to examine the texts included in the Turkish Language and Culture textbooks prepared for bilingual Turkish children living abroad at levels 6th, 7th and 8th, within the framework of the core values (justice, friendship, honesty, self-control, patience, respect, love, responsibility, patriotism, and helpfulness) specified in the 2019 Turkish Language Curriculum. The study was conducted using the document analysis method, one of the qualitative research designs. The objects of the analysis consist of the level 6th, 7th and 8th Turkish Language and Culture textbooks published by the Ministry of National Education in 2019. The research data were obtained through document analysis. The collected data were analyzed and interpreted under each value category by means of descr tive analysis. In the analysis process, the core values defined in the curriculum served as the basis for identifying examples of values within the texts. Graphs illustrating the frequencies and distributions of the identified core values in the textbooks were generated using Microsoft Excel. The analysis revealed a total of 326 instances of core values across the three grade levels. The most frequently emphasized values were helpfulness (f=63), responsibility (f=46), love (f=45), and patriotism (f=44). In contrast, self-discipline (f=16), honesty (f=14), and patience (f=14) were the least frequently represented. Thematic distribution showed that the majority of values were concentrated within the theme "Environment, Diversity, and Living Together," whereas they were sparsely represented in the theme "Games and Entertainment." The study concludes that the representation of values across both themes and grade levels is uneven. While some values are prominently featured, others appear to be comparatively underrepresented. Additionally, an upward trend in the frequency of values was observed as grade levels increased. Based on these findings, the study offers several recommendations for improving the integration of core values in educational materials.
