Transformation of the hometown concept into dwelling place in Yoruk culture: The sample of Serik Yoruks

Borderless space has become sufficient for people with the presence of architecture. This is possible by placing the space physically for people through architecture. The defined space reveals a place where people can interact continuously and mutually integrate with its existence. Space, together with its integrated structure, the boundaries of this area defines a variable structure perceived by humans through the senses, while describing a physical area for humans. Space, which is the expression of life and experiences on the perceived environment, leads to an initiation on the definition of the concept of place. Place, in turn, while referring to a physical location also includes an abstract definition in the mind beyond a built environment. Being a dwelling place makes sense by being perceived with the help of the senses in the movements of human, more than the space forming a physical environment, around human. The perceptual dimension of the space consolidates the tie with the place for people. The tie creates a dwelling place identified in the cultural structure in the interaction of space and human. The concept of non-places brought up with the modernization is an indication that the physical environment is not enough for a built space to be a dwelling place, while representing the spaces that are passed through and labelled as no-sense in a built environment. In this framework, space while integrating with human life to be inhabited, strengthens the definition of the dwelling place. The close relationship for the land where the Yoruks have settled to the dwelling place takes attention. The space-setup of the land settlements of the Yoruks, who are living a Yoruk life within the framework of their socio-cultural activities, has a rich infrastructure in terms of evaluation. For the Yoruks, the land does not only limit the spaces at different scales, but also represents a place where one feels himself belonging to in his mind, beyond the physical space. Although these seasonally settling and leaving people do not have a permanent structure in their homes, they contain different foundations for the expression and interpretation of the dwelling place. In the present study, it is an important start for discussion; "whether the dwelling places where the Yoruks migrated define the land, or is the land integrating with their life is the dwelling place?" Besides defining the concept of dwelling place based on opinions, examining the lifestyles, cultures and natural environment of the land settlements of Serik Yoruks constitute the general scope of the present study. Although the homeland coming in front of us as an outer expression of culture, does not have a permanent foundation, it is aimed to reveal the point of view to the dwelling place and transfer the disappearing Yoruk culture to the scientific environment while studying the tie to a dwelling place in human and space interaction and associating this with the concept of place based on the architectural literature.
