The consept of citizenship and identities marginalized in Turkey in the context of citizenship: Transsexual people

The present study examines the relationships of transsexual citizens living in Turkey with the state in terms of constitutional rights and liabilities. In this respect, transsexual citizens are analyzed based on political identity perception. In this study, the citizenship perceptions of transsexual citizens and to what extent they use their citizenship rights identified in the Constitution are tried to be discovered. Moreover, the present study examines whether the transsexual citizens are subjected to any discriminatory practices when using their citizenship rights, how they struggle with any such discriminatory practice, their expectations from the state regarding demands for new rights and the place they put themselves politically in their socialization process. In this respect, the difficulties and discrimination that transsexual citizens experience in daily life, their relationships with their families and social environment, their approach to politics and media, the way they earn their living, the problems they encounter in public sphere as a citizen and their expectations from future are described.The main aspects of the study are the citizenship phenomenon which still exists with historical continuum, gender mainstreaming, sexual identity and the perception of otherness. Thus, the study aims to reveal the dynamic relationship among these concepts and maintain a conceptual discussion.Key Words: Citizenship, Gender Mainstreaming, Transsexual Citizens, Citizenship Rights, State-Citizen Relationship.
