Structural analysis of sentences in Yusuf Atılgan's novel Anayurt Oteli

Language is the most fundamental tool for communication and interaction among people. Having existed since the beginning of humankind, it serves as the principal means through which concepts are understood and expressed. Constantly evolving and dynamic, language develops according to its own internal rules and enables individuals to comprehend the universe and convey their understanding. The vocabulary that embodies the values and experiences of societies over time constitutes one of the core components of language. Indeed, language functions as a vessel through which a nation's modes of perception, thought, emotion, and spiritual heritage are shaped and transmitted across generations. Beyond being a primary medium for preserving culture and ensuring its intergenerational transmission, language also plays a foundational role in the formation of cultural elements. Oral cultural components that define the identity of a society are constructed and perpetuated through language. The preservation of language which holds such critical importance in the lives of nations and its accurate transmission to future generations are made possible primarily through two key tools: dictionaries and grammatical studies. The correct and effective use of language in accordance with its communicative function, as well as its proper conveyance, relies on detailed analyses of both the language itself and the written sources produced in it. Syntax, a core area of grammar and language instruction, plays an essential role in forming coherent and functional sentence structures. Accordingly, this study is devoted to the syntactic analysis of sentence structures in a literary work from the Republican period. The aim of this study is to analyze the sentences in Yusuf Atılgan's second novel, Anayurt Oteli (Motherland Hotel), first published in 1973, in terms of their structure. Through his distinctive use of internal monologue, Atılgan masterfully conveys the psychological states of individuals, and his works occupy a unique place in Turkish literature due to both their thematic depth and stylistic originality. Within the scope of this study, all sentences in Anayurt Oteli will be analyzed in terms of their components, classified according to syntactic structure by considering dependency and independency relations, and their patterns of use will be examined. The data obtained will be evaluated statistically, offering insights into the author's stylistic tendencies and linguistic approach. A review of the existing literature indicates that no syntactic analysis has previously been conducted on this particular work. Therefore, this study is expected to contribute meaningfully to the field of linguistics in general and to syntactic studies in particular.
