Yusuf al-Qaradawi's method of interpretation in his work entitled "Tafsiru Juz 'Amma"

From past to present, several tafsirs (commentary and interpretation of the Qur'ân) have been written for understanding the Qur'ân, and a considerable corpus has been formed in this field. Although these tafsirs are commentary of a major single source, they are unique Works that bear traces from each tafsir author. Therefore, when a tafsir is required to be studied, it can never get itself entirely dissociated from its author. Yusuf al-Qaradâwî, the subject of this study, is one of the eminent and respected scholars of the current age. In shaping his ideas al-Azhar, where he had education, the movement of the al-Ikhwan al-Muslimûn, in which he actively participated at an early age, and the Islamic scholars, whom he was influenced by, had a great role. Besides, the political/social environment in which Qaradâwî was born into emerges as one of the main factors in determining his concerns and goals regarding the Islamic world. al-Qaradâwî, who, like the modernist mufassirs (scholars who comment and interpret the Qur'ân), sees establishing an authentic understanding of religion as the way of getting rid of the ummah's plight. Basing on the Companions' perception of the Qur'ân, Qaradâwî aims the clearest understanding of the Qur'ân in the modern period. For this purpose, the mufassir, who interpreted the last part of the Qur'ân, avoided the information and discussions he deemed as unnecessary, and paid close attention to the soundness of the hadiths he interpreted. Although his goals and some sensitivities are similar to modernist texts, Qaradâwî did not turn his back one tradition, and adopted to contribute to the undestanding of the Qur'ân based on the existing. It is seen that al-Qaradâwî, who created a unique method by aiming to combine the useful old with the new in Islamic sciences, did not deviate from his line in his interpretation. His tafsir, which displays its characteristics, both has remained as a classical tafsir and reached the quality of modern. Keywords: Qaradâwî, Tafsir, Amme Juz, Method
