Abstract (EN)
This thesis has been prepared in partial fulfilment for the degree of Doctor ofPhilosophy in the Department of Civil Engineering of the Graduate School ofSakarya University.The August 17, 1999 Marmara Earthquake caused significant damage in many urbandistricts, including the city of Adapazarı that experienced severe ground failure dueto the local soil conditions. Hundreds of structures settled, tilted and collapsed duein part to soil softening and liquefaction. After the earthquake different levels ofstructural damage was observed on the buildings of city.In this study, behaviour of 4-6 stories buildings that are based on local soilconditions in the city centre have been investigated with the effects of soil conditionsunder earthquake shaking by modelling in Plaxis-Dynamic Module. Real data of twoearthquake, soil and geotechnical properties have defined from the real boreholeswhich drilled after earthquake has been used. Soil profile has been modelled byPlaxis as layers with/without the effect of underground water level. The behaviours?of shallow foundation 4-6 storied buildings which are in different foundation depthare also investigated in dynamic module.Displacement quantity and time of these buildings are determined. Displacementtimeand acceleration-time graphs have been drawn for the selected foundationdepths. As a result, it found that there the horizontal displacements are independentfrom foundation depth and horizontal accelerations are dependent to building height.And also these results revealed that there could be major changes in foundation soilprofiles which in turn may affect the structural performance so the importance of soilsite investigation.
