New states of home in Istanbul within the context of time-space compression and flexibility

The ever-increasing pace of life in metropolitan cities is transforming urban residents' lifestyles, needs, and environmental perceptions. It is crucial to understand this transformation in relation to the intertwined phenomena of time and space. Developments in communication and transportation technologies trigger time-space compression through the acceleration of time perception and the contraction of spatial boundaries. This thesis analyzes the fundamental factors that trigger time-space compression and the new situations it engenders, addressing them within the framework of the concept of "new states." This study first addresses the concept of "new states" at the urban scale, and then examines the effects of urban transformations on changes related to the home. Based on the hypothesis that the concept of flexibility offers a multidimensional analytical framework for understanding the "new states" in the city and home caused by time-space compression, the sub-dimensions of flexibility are redefined in this thesis. These sub-dimensions are considered as transformability, layering, temporality/permanence, sensitivity, and hybridity, and housing projects are examined through these concepts. In this thesis, a qualitative research approach is adopted to discuss time-space compression at the macro level through the Istanbul metropolis and at the micro level through the home, the smallest living space of the individual. In order to examine the subject in depth through literature analysis and interpretation, data analysis methods such as mapping, layered timeline, and collage are used to reveal the fundamental concepts of the transforming home, the breaking points of this transformation, and the phenomenon of flexibility, and the relationships between these concepts. In relation to the conceptual framework created, multiple data sources are used to examine the concepts of flexibility through examples of housing projects produced in Istanbul after 2000. The selected sample projects are examined using a multi-scale approach at the macro, meso, and micro scales, using the five sub-dimensions of resilience previously defined. This demonstrates that resilience holds significant potential in urban transformation processes, and considering the multiple crises facing cities, examining the concept of resilience in urban resilience and urban housing is crucial.
