Abstract (EN)

Trains came up with discovering of steam power being the most important invention of mankind in the first quarter of nineteen century. Using of glass and steel which are the new for the period in built of train station and train railway, having modern plumbing system and new public space like cinema and theatre in the train station are new important step for this period. These changes of train stations support the city and peripheral area. Also it is thought that trains and construction of train railways open up an opportunity for mobility which Industrial Society that the most important result of modernism need for carrying on reproducing itself. In this context it can thought that trains and railways which use in lot of modernism narrative are representative of modernism. This study came up with the idea of it can be related that postmodernism-high speed trains and trains and railway which cause for physical and social activation and modernism. It is thought that physical and social activation effect of use of time and space. In other words The idea of change of social structure includes the space-time use of individuals. The effect which can be ridden from trains and railways in moderns period, can be examined from high speed trains in postmodern period. And this is very important for this study. In this context it should be reminded that the relations of trains and high speed trains not a linear connection but it is superposed like modernism and postmodernism. Today the most important concept affected use of time and space and provided a temporary relation with space is "time and space compression". With the idea of city and city place are the form of social structure, the purpose of this study is to discuss of temporary relations between postmodern individual and space under the effects of globalization. In this study high speed trains thought as a tool of consumption which provides ridding this relation from daily perspective. At this point the reason of choosing the high speed trains is to be more effective on daily life thanks to its practicality. In this study the concept of time and space are considered with mobility/movement concept. It is thought that changes of time effect movement and the changes of movement effect spatial practicality. And when the move accelerates, time and space compression came up with. In this thesis changes of using time and space are analyzed within changes of activities production and consumption scope. So in second chapter firstly dwelled on concept and changes of time. In this section definition and measurability of time and its connection with speed are searched. Also in this chapter discussed about memory concept to analyze the perception of time-space. Then socio-economic factors which effect changes of time analyze. The changes of perception of time are researched with regard to adopt to agricultural society, industrial revolution and production and consumption activities. With regard to these data it can be said that time which is a value in pre modern period, is a meta in the modern times. When we talk about postmodern period time can be thought as a "winned" or "lost" value because of speed that effect of production and consumption. In the third chapter spatial practical which depending on move are analyzed. The subtitles of this chapter are designated the role of the person historical process; nomadic person, employed and "new person". So first of all dwelled on relation between place and person who adopted to sedentary life. At this point concept of "settlement" and "removal or change of location" is emphasized. Also it is thought that changes of person are more valuable than changes of geography in the premodern period. Secondly mobility of employed is analyzed. Employed move between modern pose. So concept of "work", "home" and "boundary" are emphasized. The person of postmodern time is "new person" who discover about speed in his daily life and move frequently. In postmodern period the concept of consumption quite developed and it include language, culture, identity and distance. First effect of this to come up of consumption space and second effect is decreasing of connection with space because of increasing of need for consumption. At this point high speed trains are thought as a strategy which advanced against to consumption desire. At this subsection concept of "time and space compression", "non-place" and "placelessness" are emphasized. In the fourth chapter all of the concepts are discussed with daily trips with high speed trains. The reasons of being daily of high speed train trips are; decreasing of travel time, the disappearance of the need for accommodation, location in the city of high speed train station and repeat, flexible and planlessness. The best example of these daily trips is commute. In this study to understand the effect of "time and space compression" in daily life three examples are chosen. One of them is Eurostar line and one of its stops is Euralille. Eurostar line contacts three countries to each other. It is thought that Eurostar line enabled to increase of rationality which can be thought as result and supportive of globalization. And also Eurostar line enables mobility of capital and service system. So it can be said that it support to commute. Also it is thought that the relation with place is decreasing due to opportunity of fast and frequent move. Euralille is the best response for needs of new mobile person. Euralille include office buildings, accommodations, shopping malls and congress center. It can be said that structure of Euralille is a new way of construction of space. Other example is an installation with slogan "Europe is Just Next Door". It is also a commercial movie. It is important because of emphasizing daily life, concept of boundary and consumption and simultaneity. The film is about closeness of space. With other words it is about shrinkage. And the last of them is "High Speed Love" short film. The film is example for "placelessness" and commute. We see on the film only train station, high speed train but no home or any other thing about dedication. The film uses the issue of love to tell about frequent travel. Finally in this chapter high speed trains systems in Turkey are analyzed. In this subsection a survey which made with passenger of Eskisehir-Ankara high speed line. As a result it can be said that daily trips with high speed trains provide to; expand of space of daily activities, decrease of effects of boundary and relation with place. For Turkey it can said that troubled modernization process has bad effects on developing process of high sped trains. At this point current train stations and railways line are in critical positions. But despite this position in the survey which made with passenger of Eskisehir-Ankara high speed line, it seen that daily trips are important for this line. So it can be speculated that Eskişehir-Ankara line will develop like European cities.
