Abstract (EN)

Maritime transportation is the most preferable method for shipping large volumes of commodities. Technological advances in ship building and introduction of containers standardized cargo carriage, reduced cost and increased efficiency, hence competition among shipping companies. Container ships are also designed for speed, at the cost of environmental damage. Fuel consumption of ships and greenhouse gas emissions increases each year, thus new concepts such as green vehicle routing surface to adapt to the decarbonization policies. This study aims to propose a methodology for liner shipping companies adopting short sea shipping that revises shipping routes to minimize fleet fuel consumption and Carbon Dioxide emissions. A mixed integer linear programming model has been developed including port time windows and cargo demand. The proposed methodology considers involuntary speed loss caused by added resistance of winds and waves. As a case study, Black Sea routes of a container shipping company has been chosen. Static weather grids have been applied on to Black Sea for efficiently calculating involuntary speed loss for estimating average speed over ground throughout the voyage depending on the seasons. Numerical experiments have been carried out for evaluating viability and reliability of the proposed MILP model. Proposed model's optimum values and routes have been compared to the original system CO2 emissions. Significant improvements have been observed regarding CO2 emissions and fuel consumption, while effect of added resistances causes differences on seasonal routes. Accurate modelling of ship routes with green approaches will yield both financial and environmental benefits in the near future.
