Some antecedents and consequences of toxic leadership

The aim of this study is to examine the effect of leaders' personality, personal values and organizational justice on followers' toxic leadership perception and effect of followers' toxic leadership perception on organizational commitment, intention to quit organization and organizational citizenship behaviour. For this purpose, a survey was conducted on 35 principals and 173 students working in a higher education institution in Ankara. Firstly, a scale adaptation study was carried out for toxic leadership due to the absence of such scale in Turkish literature. In this context, the 30 items toxic leadership scale developed by Schmidt (2008) was adapted to Turkish. After the scale adaptation study, effect of values and neuroticism levels of leaders on subordinates' perception of toxic leadership and, values of subordinates' organizational commitment, organizational citizenship behavior and the level of effect of their intention to quit the organization has tried to be measured. Antecedents of toxic leadership was measured by "Hierarchical Linear Modeling" technique, subordinates' organizational commitment, organizational citizenship behavior and the effect of intention to quit the organization were measured by "Hierarchical Regression Analysis" technique. As a result of scale adaptation study, original scale was confirmed in five-dimensions. According to findings, it appears that there is no relationship between toxic leadership dimensions and personality, individual values and organizational justice. There are positive/negative relationships with toxic leadership dimensions and organizational commitment, organizational citizenship behaviours and intent to quit organization.
