Male identity in Zeki Demirkubuz's cinematography

The aim of this study is to investigate how the male identity is presented in the cinematography of Zeki Demirkubuz who has emerged as a well-known director in the early 1990s. In this study, in order to determine how the male identity was presented in Zeki Demirkubuz?s cinemataography, descriptive analysis method was used and an exploratory study was conducted. Three different categories were determined in order to investigate the features of main male characters in Zeki Demirkubuz?s last nine movies that have been released until the moment that this study has started. These categories have been reviewed by seeking answers for the questions that were previously selected. The post-study assesments have revealed the fact that the male identity in the cinematography of Zeki Demirkubuz, who is one of the key directors in the post-1990 era, is reflecting the conventional and modern male identities simultaneously that have roots in the social fabric. While Demirkubuz was creating the male identities (characters) in his movies, he did not striven either to meet the expectations of the society nor to oppose them, but rather he used the ordinary male characters of the daily life. In his movies, the males are presented as being flabby, non-authoritative, weak, emotional, passive and cheated individuals.
