The mixed research method, in which quantitative and qualitative methods were used together, was used in the study. In the first stage of the research; Focus group interview method, one of the qualitative methods, was used to determine the factors that prevent and facilitate the sleep quality of children with intellectuel disabilities and their mothers. The second phase of the study was conducted to determine the effect of sleep hygiene training given to mentally disabled children and their mothers according to the health promotion model on sleep quality. In the quantitative stage, quasi-experimental model with pretest-posttest control group was used. Sleep hygiene training was given to the experimental group according to the Health Improvement Model in order to improve sleep patterns and health behavior. In data collection, the sociodemographic data form of the mother and child, the interview form to determine the preventing and facilitating factors affecting sleep quality, the child Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ), the Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and the sleep sensor device were used. Data analysis was performed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences 25 (SPSS). Chi-square test, t test, Mann U Whitney test, Wilcoxon test, Kruskal Wallis test, Pearson correlation analysis were used in the analysis of the data. Results: The factors that prevent and facilitate the sleep quality of children with intellectuel disabilities and mothers are determined as three main themes: physiological, psychological and environmental factors. It was found that children and mothers in the experimental and control groups participating in the study were a homogeneous group within their own groups, and there was a statistically significant difference between children with intellectuel disabilities in the experimental and control groups about sleep before and after the education and the mean scores (p <0.05). A statistically significant difference was found between the mothers in the experimental group regarding sleep data before and after the training and their mean scores (p <0.05). Conclusion: The sub-themes that prevent the sleep quality of the mothers are the physiological health of the mother and the child, the child health and the peace of the child, the sub-themes that prevent the sleep quality of children with intellectuel disabilities, the child's physiological health and physical environment, and the subthemes that facilitate the maintenance of their routines and the physical environment.
