The effects of computer-based video instruction in teaching skill of money withdrawal from atms to individual with intellectual disabilities

The aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of computer-based video instruction (CBVI) in teaching the skill of money withdrawal from ATMs to individual with intellectual disabilities. In accordance with this purpose, three individual with intellectural disabilities were taught how to withdraw money from bank ATMs with the video-based model. The subjects were three 16-yearl-old individual with mild intellectual disabilities from a Special Education Vocational Training Centre in affiliation with the Istanbul Provincial Directorate of National Education. The single subject research model was designed with a multiple probe among participants. Furthermore, the acquisition of video-based non-target skills and the social validity of the study were also assessed by asking the participants's ideas on teaching the skill of money withdrawal from ATMs by computer-based video instruction. Results indicated that CBVI is an effective tool in teaching the skill of money withdrawal from ATMs to individual with mild intellectual disabilities. Skills, which were maintained over time, were further generalized at high levels to different ATMs, different debit cards and for different amounts of money to be withdrawn with different passwords. The findings on non-target skill acquisition were enabled by the computer-based video instruction. The social validity findings of the study revealed that the participants had benefited from the computer-based video instruction in acquiring the skill of money withdrawal from ATMs. Key Words: Computer-based video instruction, skill of money withdrawal from ATMs, peer model, intellectual disability, non-target skill
