Ziya Gökalp's situation in folklore studies

The goal of our study is to determine the situation of Ziya Gökalp in folklore studies. According to this topic, first of all, we have briefly included ?The History of the Folklore Studies of the World? in the Prologue. We have limited the history of folklore studies to the Europe because of the birthplace of the term and discipline of folklore is Europe and Ziya Gökalp has affected by European folklorists. In addition to this, in the Prologue, we tried to handle the history of Turkish folklore studies.After explaining the life, the work and literary personality of Ziya Gökalp in the First Chapter, we passed the Second Chapter which constitutes the main subject of our study. In this chapter we evaluated and examined his work which is concerning the folklore within his methods and theories.Ziya Gökalp, of course, has an important place in Turkish folklore history.We, in the Third Section, referring to his contributions to the work of the Turkish culture and folklore scientists have listed the people he affected.Gökalp is our first scholar who introduced folklor as the name ?halkiyat? to Turkish scholars for the first time by following the European folklore studies; who addressed the need to work with methods in Turkish folklore studies and what these methods are; who claimed to examine the folklore materials by collecting fom the folk. Rather than thinking of him as a folklorist it is must to see him as the founder of folklore in Turkey.So far, the Works that formed the basis of Ziya Gökalp?s ideas were given but the views that provide the basis for Turkish folklore studies is not dealt seriously. The subject of this thesis is chosen because, a study on Turkish folklore scholarly, should begin with a view to know the founding years of Turkish folklore.
