The investigation of adaptation performance of some walnut cultivars in zonguldak province

In this study, it is aimed to examine the performance of some domestic and foreign standard walnut varieties in the ecological conditions of the Devrek district of Zonguldak province, where walnut cultivation is carried out and new gardens are established with the increase in demand and where the problems are encountered in the selection of varieties and determination of varieties suitable for the region, which has not been studied before. In the study carried out in a producer garden representing the region; Aksaray type with Adilcevaz 13, Bilecik, Kaman 1, Kaplan 86, Maraş 18, Oğuzlar 77, Sütyemez Yalova 1, and Yalova 3 varieties; in addition to the foreign walnut cultivars, Chandler, Fernette, Fernor, Franquette, Hartley, Howard, Klon 139, Meylannaise, Pedro and Weinsberg 2 and Juglans hindsii rootstock, a total of 21 cultivars/genotypes were studied. Phenological observations were made on varieties, morphological characteristics were evaluated, pomological and chemical properties were carried out on fruits, observations were made about sunburn, diseases, and pests. In the study, 3-year data, between 2018-2020, was examined. In the phenological observations of the examined cultivars/genotypes; Aksaray type, Bilecik, Yalova 1, Yalova 3, Oğuzlar 77 varieties are the earliest leafing varieties; foreign cultivars such as Fernette, Fernor, Franquette leaf late, Meylannaise, Weinsberg2 and Klon 139 were observed to leaf out the latest. When the flowering characteristics are examined, it was determined that out of flowering trees, the variety Meylannaise showed "Homogamy"; the varieties Aksaray type and Bilecik and Oğuzlar 77 showed "Protogeny"; and other cultivars and types showed "Protandry" characteristics. Chandler and Howard varieties are the varieties that can be recommended for the region due to late leafing, early fruiting and high yield per unit body cross-sectional area. The cultivar/genotypes must be followed for at least 5 more years to make a definite cultivar recommendation.
