A new framework for decentralized social networks: Harnessing blockchain, deep learning, and natural language processing

This thesis explores the incorporation of blockchain technology, deep learning (DL), and natural language processing (NLP) to create a decentralized social network that aims to tackle privacy breaches and unethical data manipulation that are inherent in centralized social networks. The main goal is to provide a social media network that is secure, transparent, and focused on the needs of the users. The research is centered around three main areas: augmenting data security and privacy, boosting content authenticity and moderation, and empowering people through data control. Blockchain technology offers a distributed and unchangeable record system that greatly improves the security and confidentiality of data. Blockchain reduces the dangers of centralized data storage, such as data breaches and illegal access, by distributing data across a network of nodes and using cryptographic mechanisms. The research provides evidence that blockchain is capable of securely protecting user data, guaranteeing both privacy and trust. Deep learning and natural language processing (NLP) algorithms are essential for improving the accuracy and control of content authenticity and moderation on social networks. Deep learning algorithms are extremely efficient at classifying content, forecasting user preferences, and identifying suicidal inclinations in posts. This skill is crucial for delivering prompt interventions and guaranteeing a more secure online environment. In addition, the platform's capabilities are enhanced by employing NLP techniques, which enable the system to efficiently comprehend and analyze human language. This involves the identification of similarities between postings and the detection of plagiarism, which are crucial in upholding the validity of content and preventing the dissemination of disinformation. The blockchain-based social network's decentralized architecture grants users enhanced authority over their data, so empowering them. Conventional social networks frequently utilize user data for financial benefit without adequately compensating or empowering the users. Conversely, the suggested solution guarantees that consumers maintain ownership of their data and possess enhanced authority over its utilization. Smart contracts enable transparent and secure interactions, enabling users to participate in transactions and data exchanges without the need for a central authority. Nevertheless, the establishment of a social network based on blockchain technology presents several obstacles. Scalability is a major concern. Public blockchain networks frequently encounter scalability issues as a result of the substantial computational resources needed for transaction validation and consensus methods. This can lead to decreased transaction speed and increased operational expenses, thus impeding the mainstream acceptance of the system. Another obstacle lies in the interpretability of deep learning models. DL algorithms are extremely efficient in data analysis, yet their intricate and obscure nature sometimes leads to them being referred to as "black boxes." The absence of openness can provide challenges, especially in situations when comprehending the decision-making process is essential. Moreover, the incorporation of blockchain and distributed ledger (DL) technologies necessitates substantial processing capacity and infrastructure, which can pose a hindrance for smaller enterprises or individual users. Ensuring that decentralized social networks are accessible and affordable is crucial for their future development and adoption. Future research should prioritize the development and implementation of cutting-edge technologies, such as sharding and off-chain solutions, to improve scalability. Furthermore, it is imperative to prioritize the development of DL models that are easier to understand and to integrate explainable AI techniques in order to improve transparency and foster user trust. By investigating the incorporation of additional cutting-edge technologies, such as edge computing and federated learning, it is possible to enhance the efficiency and safety of decentralized social networks. It is crucial to prioritize the accessibility and cost of these technologies for smaller companies and individual consumers. Ultimately, the combination of blockchain, deep learning, and natural language processing presents a hopeful resolution for revolutionizing social networks. The suggested approach has the potential to revolutionize the social media ecosystem by addressing privacy concerns, improving content authenticity, and empowering users. This study presents an all-encompassing structure for creating a social networking platform that is more safe, transparent, and centered around the needs of the users. This framework sets the stage for future advancements in digital communication. The challenges identified emphasize the necessity of ongoing enhancement and originality to fully achieve the advantages of these technologies. In summary, this thesis adds to the current endeavors aimed at establishing a more secure, fair, and user-focused online atmosphere.

Segmentation of magnetic resonance images with deep learning for the diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma

Aim: The aim of this study is to systematically perform a comparative analysis of deep learning-based segmentation models in order to enhance accuracy in the diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The analysis specifically evaluates the impact of different imaging sequences (T1- and T2-weighted), resolution levels, and preprocessing techniques (Gaussian filtering and histogram equalization) on segmentation performance. Methods: In this study, T1-weighted MR images from the ATLAS dataset and T2-weighted MR images obtained from the institution were utilized. Both datasets were processed at three different resolutions (128×128, 256×256, and 512×512). The images were subjected to Gaussian filtering (sigma 1–5) and two distinct histogram equalization techniques: standard Histogram Equalization (HE) and Contrast-Limited Adaptive Histogram Equalization (CLAHE). The performance of the segmentation models was evaluated using several metrics, including the Dice Similarity Coefficient (DICE), Intersection over Union (IoU), Pixel Accuracy (PA), Recall (REC), Sensitivity (SEN), and Specificity (SPE). The results were compared using multivariate statistical tests. Results: The T1-weighted ATLAS dataset demonstrated more consistent and higher overall segmentation performance across standard evaluation metrics. However, the institution's T2-weighted dataset yielded competitive and in some cases superior results for specific metrics. Notably, the T2-weighted images achieved a high Recall score of 0.969 at 128×128 resolution and a high Specificity score of 0.9936 at 512×512 resolution. Gaussian filtering produced optimal results in the sigma 1–2 range, while a noticeable decline in performance was observed at sigma 5. Furthermore, the influence of resolution and filter level on certain metrics particularly Specificity was found to be statistically significant (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The study demonstrates that resolution, MR sequence type, and preprocessing methods must be jointly considered in liver tumor segmentation. Unlike most studies that report only DICE and IoU, this work includes statistical comparisons of multiple metrics. Results show that optimized preprocessing improves both segmentation accuracy and computational efficiency. Thus, the study provides methodological and applied contributions to medical image segmentation. Keywords: Hepatocellular Carcinoma, Deep Learning, Magnetic Resonance Imaging, T1-Weighted Sequence, T2-Weighted Sequence, Segmentation.

In recent years, machine learning techniques, particularly deep learning, have shown significant potential in enhancing diagnostic accuracy through medical image analysis. However, challenges such as data privacy and security concerns pose significant barriers to training deep learning models using centralized medical datasets. Federated Learning (FL) has emerged as a promising solution, enabling collaborative model training across multiple institutions without the need for sharing sensitive patient data. This study presents a novel application of Federated Learning for liver tumor classification using Magnetic Resonance Imaging scans. The proposed model leverages the EfficientNetB0 architecture within the FL framework. The performance of the FL model is compared to conventional deep learning architectures, including CNN, EfficientNet, MobileNetV3, ResNet50, and VGG16. Experimental results demonstrate that the FL-based EfficientNetB0 model achieves superior performance, with an accuracy of 93.75%, precision of 99.71%, recall of 87.79%, F1-score of 93.37%, and ROC-AUC of 99.19%. These results highlight the potential of FL to provide high classification performance while preserving data privacy. In conclusion, this study underscores the growing role of FL in the healthcare sector, where privacy-preserving AI solutions are becoming increasingly critical. Future work can explore the integration of FL with more advanced architectures and larger, more diverse datasets to further enhance model generalizability and robustness.

Domain models are used to establish general overview of a software system to ease the communication between the project stakeholders and as various inputs for other software development activities. Due to these benefits, domain model extraction is an important task for both researchers and practitioners of software projects. Domain model extraction process bears challenges such as being labour intensive, requiring extensive communication which is not always possible in real-world projects, and coverage completeness being hard to attain. For these reasons, researchers propose methods to ease and aid the domain extraction process using natural language processing methods. In this study, we propose a fully automated approach to extract domain models from unstructured natural language requirements which combines capabilities of modern language models, a state-of-the-art term ranking algorithm, and a rule based extraction module. We evaluate our proposal with both industrial and educational data sets and perform a quantitative evaluation. The state of the art overperform our approach in the relation detection performance and overall precision of the pipeline. In terms of domain concept coverage and individual concept detection we achieve on par or better overall performance compared to state-of-the-art methods. Our approach perform better in data sets from the industry compared to the students' data sets.

Anomaly detect ionin internet of medical things using deep learning

The increasing adoption of the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) in healthcare systems offers transformative benefits in patient monitoring, real-time diagnostics and automated medical services. However, this growing integration of interconnected medical devices into healthcare infrastructures simultaneously opens up critical cybersecurity vulnerabilities. IoMT environments are particularly vulnerable due to their device heterogeneity, constrained computational capabilities and the high-stakes nature of patient data and services. Traditional signature-based intrusion detection systems (IDS) fall short in handling modern and evolving network threats, particularly zero-day attacks and subtle anomalous behavior that may not match known malicious patterns. Consequently, there is a pressing need for intelligent anomaly detection solutions that are capable of learning complex attack patterns from network data in IoMT contexts. This thesis presents a comprehensive investigation into machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) approaches for network-based anomaly detection using the CICIoMT2024 dataset, one of the most comprehensive benchmark datasets in this field. The goal is to evaluate and compare the effectiveness of different algorithms in classifying network traffic into normal and various anomalous categories, thereby providing a strong baseline for future IoMT security frameworks. The dataset includes traffic from diverse IoMT devices and comprises 18 distinct attack classes in addition to benign data. Our experiments are structured around three classification tasks: binary classification (benign vs. anomalous), 6-class classification (aggregated attack categories) and 19-class classification (fine-grained attacks). In the baseline evaluation, traditional machine learning models such as Logistic Regression, Random Forest and AdaBoost were trained using standard pipeline techniques involving data cleaning, class balancing, and performance metrics evaluation. For the binary classification task, Random Forest performed exceptionally well, achieving an accuracy of 0.98 along with high precision and recall, demonstrating that classical models are still highly effective for simple anomaly detection tasks where the decision boundaries are more clearly separable. To address more complex classification tasks, deep learning architectures were introduced. These included Dense Neural Networks (DNN), 1D Convolutional Neural Networks (Conv1D), Recurrent Neural Networks (RNN), Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks and Attention mechanisms. Furthermore, we proposed hybrid deep learning models that combine RNN layers with LSTM units and Attention mechanisms. The hybrid model architecture, specifically the RNN + LSTM + Attention stack, demonstrated superior performance in handling multivariate time series data with spatial and temporal dependencies. This model achieved an accuracy of 0.99 in binary class task, 0.82 in the 6-class task and 0.66 in the 19-class task, significantly outperforming the standalone models The attention mechanism enhanced the model's capacity to focus on the most informative time steps, particularly in sequences where anomalous behavior manifests intermittently or subtly. This capacity to dynamically prioritize relevant temporal features proved crucial in distinguishing between closely related attack types, such as DoS vs. DDoS or Spoofing vs. Benign traffic. Additionally, the inclusion of stacked layers in the hybrid models allowed for multi-level abstraction, enabling the model to learn both short-term patterns (through RNN layers) and long-term dependencies (through LSTM layers). Despite these promising results, the research identified several limitations. First, the reliance on a single dataset, albeit comprehensive, may limit generalizability. Second, deep models entail considerable computational overhead, rendering them less feasible for real-time or edge deployment without optimization. Lastly, class imbalance, even after downsampling, remains a challenge in training fair and unbiased models, especially when detecting underrepresented attack types. To overcome these limitations and further advance the field, several recommendations for future work are proposed. One major direction involves optimizing models for real-time deployment on edge devices using model compression techniques like weight sparsification, reduced-precision formats and teacher-student training frameworks. Another crucial area is explainability—employing tools like SHAP, LIME, or attention heatmaps can help visualize decision-making processes and provide insights into model behavior, thereby increasing trust in AI-powered intrusion detection systems. Moreover, expanding the dataset to include traffic from newer IoMT devices and communication protocols would enhance generalization and adaptability to real-world conditions. Feature engineering is another avenue for improvement. Re-extracting and enriching feature sets from raw pcap files could uncover new, more discriminative patterns—especially those that are currently indistinguishable using the existing features. This could also improve classification performance for subtle or overlapping attack types. Furthermore, adaptability to dynamic conditions in IoMT networks, which frequently experience changes in traffic volumes, device states, and operational contexts, is critical. Online learning, domain adaptation, and continual training approaches could help ensure models remain effective over time. Lastly, cross-dataset generalization and benchmarking are necessary to test the robustness and transferability of proposed models across different network environments. Evaluating the trained models on other benchmark datasets or real-world IoMT traffic can reveal the degree to which these systems can handle diverse operational scenarios and novel attack strategies. In conclusion, this thesis provides a thorough and structured comparison of various machine learning and deep learning methods for anomaly detection in IoMT networks using a large, realistic dataset. The findings underscore the potential of hybrid deep learning models with attention mechanisms to outperform traditional techniques in complex classification tasks. Nevertheless, realizing practical and generalizable solutions requires further efforts in dataset diversification, model explainability, optimization for edge devices, and adaptive learning strategies. As healthcare continues to evolve into a more connected and data-driven domain, robust and intelligent anomaly detection systems will play a crucial role in protecting patient data and ensuring the continuity and security of critical medical services.

Virtual context-based multi-camera vehicle tracking

Vision-based vehicle detection and tracking systems are becoming essential utilities for extracting statistical traffic information on roads. However, single camera causes data loss due to occlusion or insufficient shooting area. The camera position is also an important factor for healthy observation. There are panoramic cameras or fish-eye cameras to observe wider scene, however they do not solve the occlusion problem. In this study we propose a new concept "virtual context" which is created by merging multiple camera video streams intelligently. This context can be fed to any object detection and tracking algorithm such as YOLO.
