Soft power of Turkey and non-governmental organizations: The case of IDDEF
Ismailaga is a religious community implementing faith-based activities at the domestic and international levels with the instrument of an NGO, IDDEF. IDDEF (The Federation of Organizations that Value Humanity) is one of the NGOs of Ismailaga conducting educational and humanitarian aid activities with the religious spirit of Sufism at the international level, chiefly in African and Asian countries. This study first explores the values of Ismailaga in creating a civil society and analyzes IDDEF's international activities affecting Turkey's diplomatic relations in the context of soft power. In this thesis, the conceptual and theoretical framework related to community, identity, and civil society is emphasized, and qualitative research is carried out using participant observation, in-depth, semi-structured interviews, and a literature review. The study describes the values and mentality of the Ismailaga community, which forms the center of IDDEF's activities, and analyzes IDDEF's international education and humanitarian aid activities based on religious, Sufistic, and ahlusunnah (orthodox) values, revealing how it affects Turkish foreign policy in the context of soft power.
"You wake up each day with four stranger kids": An ethnographic research with children living in children's homes
There are many protection and care models for disadvantaged children in Turkey. One model is called "children's homes," in which five to six children separated by their age and gender stay together with three care workers who do shifts of twenty-four hours. This research is parallel to the ideas and theories of the New Sociology of Childhood and tries to understand the experiences and cultural politics of childhood with regard to children living in children's homes in Turkey. The research combines three qualitative research methodologies, in-depth interviews, focus group interviews, and participant observation, to understand children's views and how they position themselves and perform their subjectivity in the face of discourses that reproduce the cultural politics and the practices of their daily lives. Keywords: Children's Homes, Cultural Politics of Childhood, Embodied Space, New Sociology of Childhood, Stigma.
Changing experiences of marriage and masculinity in Turkey: Turkish men's transnational marriages to Indonesian women in the Black Sea Region
This study investigates the changing experience of marriage and masculinity throughout Turkish men's transnational marriages to the Indonesian women in Giresun and their masculinity performances with respect to these marriages. The study aims to understand how Turkish men perform masculinity or masculinities during their marriages to Indonesian women and their perception of Turkish women. This study is based on ethnographic research conducted in several districts of Giresun in the Black Sea Region. This research claims that it is not only the individual choices that make the trust over the transnational marriages but also more likely the established networks of marriage across the continent and the several socio-cultural factors such as the perception of religiosity and a trustworthy nationality. Besides, the study reveals the dynamics on which the ideals of marriage and masculinity are constructed by Turkish men. It also reveals that the already existing perceptions of gender and masculinity are both challenged and reaffirmed through the transnational marriages of Indonesian women. Rather than focusing on women and the performance of femininity, the present study carries significance as it primarily focuses on male practices and masculinity performances in the context of a transnational marriage. Key Words: Ethnography, Masculinity, Mate Selection, Transnational Marriage, Trust Ethnography.
Conceptualization of romantic love in Ghana: A probe within the Zongo societies
Romantic love is a complicated and multifaceted phenomenon that has been examined and disputed by academics from various fields, including psychology, sociology, anthropology, and philosophy. The evolutionary perspective on romantic love contends that it results from natural selection and is motivated by the desire to find a compatible spouse with the highest possibility of generating healthy children. In contrast, the cultural view of romantic love contends that romantic love is a social construct that differs between cultures and time periods. This thesis aims to try to analyze how romantic love is conceptualized in Ghana's Hausa-speaking Zongo communities and cultures. This thesis probes into the Zongo culture, the ethnic groups in Zongo, globalization, and its effect on the people's understanding of romantic love. This work examines the relationship between love, romantic love, and culture. Then, it gives a detailed history of the formation of the Zongo communities and the intercultural relations between people from different tribes and ethnic groups settling in Zongo. This ethnographic research documents diverse encounters and interactions with the people interviewed and allows us to hear the meaning people give to love and romantic love. It reveals how they define love and romantic love, how it is expressed within these communities, and the agency of religion on people's conception of romantic love in Zongo. Keywords: Culture, Ghana, Hausa, Love, Romantic Love, Zongo.
Discursive tradition(s) as iconoclasm; the falsification of history and the emergence of oppositional Muslims in India
This thesis is based on how the (re)construction of history plays a significant role in the formation of the national 'spirit'. The (re)creation of history plays an essential role in the conceptualisation of a common primordial variable, which further helps in justifying or making up for the loss of spiritual authority in the modern nation-state. This (re)creation is an alarmingly common phenomenon in almost every modern nation-state, wherein certain instances of indigenous conflicts are taken up as proof to define a nation's historical continuity. This process ignores the epistemology of such historical events. Then, it frames them into the longue durée of a nation's history, which helps justify the primordial existence of the same. History's homogeneous (re)construction serves as the foundation of the modern nation-state building process, as the nation-state finds it incumbent to identify the 'them' to crystalise the 'us'. This thesis discusses this issue about the Indian Muslims, who, due to the British colonial histography, have been placed into the 'them' category. Presently, Indian Indian-Muslims are divided into various Islamic traditions that have come into existence due to diverse historical hermeneutical engagements with Islamic texts. In addition, this leads to a hermeneutical heterogeneity among them, and as a result, the Islamic traditions remain largely stratified. This thesis focuses on two such Islamic traditions: Ahl-e Sunnat and the Deobandi movement. The rising Hindutva (Hindu nationalism) among the Indian Hindus greatly consolidates and justifies itself through British colonial historiography, which has always presented Muslims as being inherently iconoclastic. Employing the empirical data obtained from an ethnographic study involving 21 participants, I argue that several new phenomena have emerged among young Indian-Muslims, including what we call the Pajāma -wearing Protestants and "oppositional Muslims." Keywords: Indian-Muslims, Indian-Hindus, Nation-State, Oppositional Muslims, Pajāma-wearing Protestants, (Re)creation of History, Spiritual Authority.
Digital media and the religious literacy process: Narratives of Muslim American female youth
In the digital age that we currently live in, mostly everything we are using is associated with technology. With this comes an overwhelming number of research on the negative and positive outcomes of technology in every aspect of our lives. As a result, it is mandatory to evaluate the intersection of social media with different sectors of society. One example is found in comprehending how social media, as a computer-mediated technology, behaves as an educational space for specific members of society- the youth that spend the majority of their time on their phones and Internet. This sociological and anthropological work will not strictly uncover the type of religious knowledge that Muslim American female youth acquire via these social media spaces. It will tie this knowledge into the construction of the Muslim American female identity by shedding light on how these youth engage in worship practices based on their religious understandings. In other words, I argue that we should study social media just like any institution that shapes a group's identity through their religious perceptions.
Hunger and the help: A case study of rizq as a civil society organisation in urban Pakistan
The research aims to explore and evaluate the efficacy of grassroots social movements in battling food insecurity amongst the urban poor in Pakistan. By using Ribot and Peluso's Theory of Access (2003), Symbolic interactionism, and Resource Mobilization Theory (RMT), a theoretical framework was established to study the role of a non-profit organization, Rizq, in battling food insecurity and hunger. By employing the use of in-depth interviews and participant observation, Rizq was analyzed as a case study in its efficacy in mitigating food insecurity and hunger by a two-pronged approach: the role of Rizq in the provision of food and the effect it had on the beneficiaries. The result of the study showed that Rizq was successful in mitigating hunger and food insecurity. However, the results were short-term. Further research is needed in urban poverty to understand the issue of food security as a multidisciplinary phenomenon and strive toward possible local solutions.
Clans and comrades: exploring the religious and secular contours of socialist Somalia
The traditional secularization theory, a key principle in modernization discussions, has often been seen as a universal model for global societies. However, this model has not only been a challenge to apply in the study of traditional African societies where religion plays a central role in the fabric of society and governance. Bearing this discussion in mind, this study examines an oft-neglected sociological angle in the study of Somalia's nation-building story: the secular formations of the post-independence socialist government and its role in the nation-building and socio-cultural transformations of Somalia from a tribal society to a state. Through a qualitative content analysis of primary and secondary data, this research explores the lived experiences of diasporic Somalis who were living in the newly born nation-state and their understanding of identity and religion in a rapidly changing society. This study suggests that by questioning the religious versus secular binary and adopting more multifaceted conceptualizations of secularism, statecraft, power and religion, alternative approaches to studying secularism in Somalia are not only possible but necessary. It finds that secularism, as a form of governance, established itself as a questioning power. Rather than establishing norms, it set itself to question and deconstruct what was already normative in society regarding identity, traditional social/cultural, and religious practice. The consequence of this paradoxical questioning was religion transformed into an object of politics and the creation of state-sanctioned religious vernacular. The making of an order: An ethnography of Romani sufis in Uskudar
This thesis traces the formation and transformation process of the Gulsheni-Sezai Sufi order in Selami Ali neighborhood in Uskudar, known for its Romani inhabitants. Three components of a representative Sufi group have been determined to be a charismatic leader, a sacred space and a set of beliefs reified with rituals. Throughout this study the establishment of these three components are examined within the Selami Ali context; and the reconciliation of the heterodox Sufi identity with Romani identity is analyzed with a conclusion that contrary to stereotypical view that the Romani people are discordant with religion, the Sufi Muslim identity and Romani identity have more parallelism than difference and this is why the neighborhood could easily embrace the newly founded Gulsheni order. The fieldwork was carried out in a period of 18 moths between 2018-2019 with intervals not longer than a month, during which the data for this study was collected via in-depth oral interviews and participant observation. Keywords: Sufism, Romani Identity, Sacred Space, Charisma, Ritual
An outside look at the Turkish reform: The Medeniyet newspaper
The modernization process and the reform movement started in 1923 with the proclamation of the Republic in Turkey did not only affect the Turks of Turkey but the Turks of Bulgaria. The newspapers published by the Turks of Bulgaria during these years featured the developments in Turkey. The Medeniyet Newspaper is one of these newspapers. The newspaper contains many news, analyses, and criticisms about the Turkish reform and the changes in Turkey. This thesis aimed to understand the rationale of the criticisms directed towards the Turkish reform through discourse analysis of the related articles in the Medeniyet Newspaper. Accordingly, it was understood that the main reason for the newspaper's criticism is the imagination of civilization and the value and role attributed to religion in the formation and preservation of civilization. According to this understanding, during the modernization process, the reorganization of political and social life according to the principle of laicism was criticized. Thus, the principle of laicism was at the core of criticism. It is not possible to see similar criticisms in newspapers of the period in Turkey because the press was kept under control by the laws and regulations. For this reason, the Medeniyet Newspaper is an important source in this regard and its cultural, political, historical, social, and religious writings enable a sociological analysis.
Müslüman kadınların deneyimlerinde mekânın ve duyguların rolü: Hanımlar İlim ve Kültür Derneği (HİKDE)
This thesis examines how "Muslim women" in Hanımlar İlim ve Kültür Derneği (HİKDE), which is regarded as a pioneer association in the process of Muslim women's activities in Turkey, define and give meaning to their experiences through the debates of Islamism and the public sphere in Turkey. It is revealed that although their main motivation and reference sources are Islam, women reject "Islamist" discourse attributed to them for the reason they find it political and also believe that their activities have meaning beyond any discourse, hence define themselves as just "Muslim women". This thesis also reveals the meaning and role of space and emotions in the activities of women. It is argued that for Muslim women, being in action which is regarded as a necessity in Islam, requires a space understanding beyond public/private dichotomy. While space is seen as a tool for carrying out their actions, at the same time as a historical madrasa building it corresponds to a representational space where Islamic practices are fulfilled and the understanding of waqf is maintained. In addition, it is claimed that this association is the embodiment form of women's emotions that encompass their actions and play a crucial role together with affective atmosphere that is created through certain objects and subjects. For this thesis, a fieldwork is conducted including in-depth interviews, focus groups, and participant observations. Moreover, the content analysis of the Şadırvan Journal which was published in the first years of the association, and the analysis of other written and visual materials are included.
The context of civil society: Analyzing the Muslim women's participation in the institutionalization process in Turkey
The aim of this thesis is to examine the motivations of Muslim women who established institutions with the definitions of association and foundation in the 1970s in the context of their feelings and beliefs. Many institutions currently defined as civil society organizations have connections with these institutions established by Muslim women in the 1970s. In my study, I argue that both the institutions defined as civil society organizations and those established as associations and foundations in the past are open to different interpretations. It is seen that when the meaning that women attribute to their activities and the institutions they establish is analyzed. When the traces of this interpretation are followed, it is seen that there are similar motivations with the motivation of institutions in the past. The meanings attributed to institutionalization in the 70s can also be attributed to the institutions engaged in activities with the definition of civil society organizations today. Women's motivations are also related to historical experiences, political environment, and vakıf understanding in the past. This motivation enabled women to do activities towards their goals through their emotions. I used multiple data collection methods for the study through in-depth interviews, focus groups, ethnography, and participant observation. In addition, I analyzed written and visual materials, publications and web resources. Fieldwork was carried out in Istanbul. All these data, based on historical trace version and discourse analysis in the field, reveal that similar religious beliefs in Muslim women produce similar emotionality. In this context, veiling, which emerged as the embodiment of religious belief, produced a collective emotional spirit in women and gathered women around a common purpose in the institutionalization process. Due to the state's prohibitions on covering establishment of educational institutions is one of the important stages of institutionalization. Digital community, fan spaces and gendered emotions: An analysis on Korean pop music (K-POP) fandom in Turkey
This study aims to analyze the experiences of Korean Pop music (K-Pop) fans in Turkey. In recent years, K-Pop has been discussed together with gender norms in the context of Turkey, claiming that K-Pop is a danger for family structure and existing gender codes. This study intends to investigate both on this discourse, which can be named as anti K-Pop discourse; and on fan experience, which mainly exist on digital space, to be able to see how gender is understood. With this aim, I have used multiple data collection techniques such as; in-depth interviews and focus groups with fans, ethnography, digital ethnography, discourse analysis and participant observation. According to the data obtained, the concept of gender is highly related with space and emotions as well as popular culture representations. Analyses of the interviews revealed that especially the concept of masculinity can be understood more with its attachments to negative emotions and oppressing/threatening behaviors, while femininity has attachments like positive emotions and softer behaviors. This study shows that existing definitions on gender representations are too limiting and oppressive especially when expressing various emotions both for men and women. In this context, different gender representations shown by K-Pop idols, unlike the claims of anti K-Pop discourses, raised interest not because of their 'feminine' appearances but because of their softer behaviors and freedom in emotional expressions which are socially constructed as femininity. Together with this, the study shows that these 'more feminine' masculinity representations are perceived as more secure and reliable because of their distance from hegemonic masculinity representations. While pointing to the problems of existing definitions for gender norms, this study reveals the impact of emotional connection and digital space on understanding gender norms. Keywords: popular culture, culture industry, gender, digital space, emotions
The muslim malay diaspora in Canada: A Case of Muslim agency and global civility
The thesis examines the theoretical framework of transterritoriality and global civil society, and how they are manifested in preformative agency, locally and globally through the ethnographic study of a small groups of a Muslim Malay Canadian diaspora residing in Ontario, Canada. The study explores the negotiations of the normative discourses of tradition and religion in shaping the identities of members of the community in fighting for their recognition as a Muslim Asian minority in Canada. The ethnography suggests that there is a a tug war between adopting transterritorial ideals of global trends yet a need for stability and home making through territoriality. This happens as diasporas redefine their traditions that accompanies them in a new homeland. In addition, to highlighting the role religion plays in grounding the community in the face of cultural ordeals. Thus, introducing through a transmodern theoretical framework, the role the discursive tradition of adab plays in affecting the civil conduct of the diaspora as members of a global civil society.
Hopes in transition: an ethnography of sub-saharan African migrants in Istanbul
Istanbul has become one of the most crucial nodes in the global network of refugees and migrants' trails, routes and destinations to Europe. Consequently, Istanbul has become a "hub" for migrants and refugees who are waiting impatiently to sneak across the border in the dark of the night to Greece or Bulgaria. Moreover, sub-Saharan African transit migrants' numbers have increased drastically in Istanbul over the years. This phenomenon is the subject matter of this ethnographic research project. This research has three objectives: first and foremost, is to explore the causes and triggers of migration in Sub-Saharan African countries; Second, is to relay the lived experiences, testimonies, voices, struggles, "victories", resilience, hurdles and pains of the Sub-Saharan African migrant throughout the long journeys that are imbued with hopes of prosperity but that have in-store for the migrants detentions, violence, death, rape, vulnerability, exploitation, racism, Xenophobia, uncertainties, humanitarian aid, and sensationalist media coverage; third, is to offer an ethnographic account of sub-Saharan African migrants' life-experiences, life-conditions and livelihoods in Istanbul. The aim of this study is to paint and portray the sub-Saharan African migrants and refugees as victims and "creation" of a multi-faceted and complex interactions of matrices. These include: the brutal legacy of colonialism and its subsequent demolition of existing indigenous social, environmental and political institution; the failure of the post-colonial nationbuilding processes in many sub-Saharan Africa countries; exploitative capitalism and financial corporations that has wreak havoc on the environments, hence altering centuries-long communal lives and their natural eco-system. This thesis aims to contribute to the sociology and anthropology of migration studies in Turkey and subsequently critique and challenge essentialist approaches predicated on security, humanitarianism, nationalist and integration perspectives that disregard implicitly and discursively the life experiences, testimonies and personal struggles of migrants, refugees and asylum seekers. Keywords: Borders, Life-stories, Migrants, Post-colonialism, Refugees, Sub-Sahara Africa
Memory and emotions in the identity construction: The Algerian descendants in Adana
This thesis examines the identity formation of Algerian descendants in Adana and Kozan based on the narratives of three different generations to understand how they define and give meaning to their identity and belonging in Turkey. The research aims to explain what it means to be Algerian descendants in Turkey and live between two cultures and analyze how diasporic identity formed. For this, I conducted 20 recorded interviews, attended different community gatherings, and engaged in participant observation. The study considers both individual and collective identity theories to investigate identity formation in a diaspora. The findings suggest that interlocutors' identity construction was influenced by nostalgia and collective memory transmitted through generations. Moreover, the interlocutors' emotional connection to Algeria led to creating a utopian nostalgic version of it through which they sustain their ethnic identity. Observation in the field suggests that Algerian descendants have solid emotional ties to the homeland through their religious affiliation, culture, symbols, and customs, but this belonging changes according to generation. The study shows that generations experienced different political contexts in Turkey regarding otherizing and discrimination of minorities, leading them to position and negotiate their identity strategically. Interlocutors also negotiate their belonging to Turkey through narratives, symbols, and "usable" memories that legitimize their presence. Thus, this research shows the emergence of a hybrid identity as a strategy of integration and belonging. It is also argued that hybrid identities emerge, nurture, and are negotiated in diasporic spaces. In this sense, this study contributes to the "third-space" (Bhabha 1994)conceptualization by exploring the diasporic space through memory and emotion repertoires. This research is the first to focus on the identity formation of Algerian descendants in Adana and Kozan; it contributes in that sense to the literature on Algerian diaspora identity but also to the contemporary Turkish and Algerian historiography. Keywords: Belonging, Hybridity, Identity, Memory, Nostalgia, Third-space.
Between state and religion: The marginalization of Aliya Madrasa students in Bangladesh
This sociological and anthropological work traces Aliya madrasa students' vulnerability in contemporary Bangladesh. Madrasa education has been at the center of contentious political debate in Bangladesh since independence in 1971. After independence, secularism was introduced as the central pillar of the constitution and applied to build a secular nation. Meanwhile, religious especially madrasa education was antagonized, politicized, and perceived as communalist, antinational, and primitive. For this reason, Aliya madrasa education was marginalized, not even recognized by the secular state until 1985. After being recognized partially in 1985, when Aliya madrasa students started to enter public universities and government jobs, the public university authority, with the blessing of the state, which is historically dominated by the authoritarian secular discourse, began to put several extra conditions for admission of madrasa students. As a consequence of these extra conditions, hundreds of thousands of madrasa students were denied admission in public universities, and rejected from a government job for their educational background. Nevertheless, this secular state-sponsored historically constructed alienating discourse has cost madrasa students the opportunity to get government jobs. They are subjected to violence in public universities and the public sphere, stigmatized as antinational and communal elements. In order to study the above phenomenon, this research draws up the trajectory of otherisation and ostracization of madrasa students in contemporary Bangladesh and tries to connect historical trajectories with their lived experiences through a genealogical and anthropological approach. This thesis aims to contribute to the sociological and anthropological discussion of the Bangladeshi secular state, violence, discrimination, and the Aliya madrasa.
The influence of international schools' Western culture on Egyptian Muslim student identity
This study examines the influence of the international education system on Egyptian Muslim student particularly in terms of their religious identity. Studying in international schools that provide English-medium education is an increasingly prevalent aspiration in Egypt in recent years. This study examines the relationship between the identity development process and such schools' Western culture. To be able to examine the question empirically, I have conducted fieldwork using in-depth interviews and participant observation. 31 participants were included in this study— parents, teachers, and students who were attending different international schools. The data I obtained indicates that identity dynamically interacts with education and culture. The subculture of international schools is found to be heavily influenced by Western culture. The limited exposure of students to their local culture, compared to the Westernized one they are exposed to at school, results in alienation from their local culture. Such alienation was found to hinder students' identity development process as well as the formation of their religious identity. In fact, as I demonstrate in this thesis, students struggle to maintain their local identity. The literature suggests that students' experience of excessive exposure to such schools' Western culture and use of English language significantly more than Arabic language, combined with limited exposure to Islamic education has led to a significant dysfunction in their religious identity formation process. Hence, their identity as Muslims is found to be unstable.
Women narratives in Hakkari between the militarist and state feminism
The study examines the politics of women's bodies as Kurdish women practice them in Hakkari. Kurdish women's security worries, the Turkish women's movement's advancement within the framework of state feminism, and their precarious position between the Turkish feminist movement and the Kurdish women's movement are all covered. From a militarist feminist standpoint, it also examines why Kurdish women are not fully represented in the Kurdish women's movement. Additionally, the study exposes the masculine dominance in women's body politics and the nationalist mentalities within the Kurdish and Turkish women's movements while also critiquing the representational aspect of jineolojî, the central claim of the Kurdish women's movement. Moreover, women's conceptions of freedom are sacrificed and reified in the face of masculine policies, as demonstrated by the interviewees' testimonies and a thorough literature review. The way that gender-discriminated women are forced into subservient and "other" roles to serve masculine political objectives is examined in the framework of militarist and state feminism. It also highlights how ideas like Kurdish fighters and village guards are used to influence the bodily performances of Kurdish women. The study's central thesis contends that feminist discussions must be recreated and that women's status in Hakkari within the so-called feminist or women's movements was created under political aims. Keywords: Jineolojî, Kurdish Women's Body Politics, Militarist Feminism, Patriarchal Politics, State Feminism.
The politics of religiousity and secularism narratives from the West Azerbaijan, Iran
The interaction between religiosity and secularism in contemporary Iran is a complex and dynamic issue that reflects a society struggling with its historical religious identity and the effects of modern secularism. Considering the rapid pace of social change in Iran in recent decades, which puts secularism and, as a result, religion at the center of the debate, it is necessary to conduct new research in this field to recognize the new perceptual mechanisms regarding these two concepts. As a result, the current study provides a pulse check on religiosity and secularism in Iranian society. This study, which used a qualitative approach based on in-depth interviews and discourse analysis, attempted to reveal how Iranians perceive the categories of religion and secularism. According to the research findings, people approach the categories of religiosity and secularism differently, and their behavior demonstrates an extent of distance from religion. This does not imply that Iranian society has become non-religious, rather, it represents a type of quest to reject the government's interpretation of religion and replace it with a new one. Factors influencing the adoption of these approaches include intergenerational and family relationships, modern manifestations of social life, and behavioral and speech contradictions of religious guardians and rulers. This study demonstrates that by distinguishing between the government's interpretation of religion and real Islam, secularism debates are legitimized in Iranian society. Furthermore, this study demonstrated how religious rule in Iran does not serve religion, but rather acts as a catalyst in the secularization process due to its internal contradictions and paradoxical stance toward modernism.
Mekânin üretimini ve göçü yeniden düşünmek: İstanbul Fatih ı̇lçesi örneği
Istanbul's Fatih district has rapidly transformed since the Syrian refugees started to settle as new dwellers following the forced migration flow due to the 2011 Syrian civil war. Since their collective settlements have accelerated and there has been a noticeable increase in the number of Syrian cafes, restaurants, and small businesses in the Fatih's spaces along with a number of local residents from Turkey have moved out of Fatih for new emerging urban spaces such as Basaksehir district, Fatih district has correspondingly changed its spatial relations and embedded new social and cultural parameters. As this indicates that the district is a significant constitutive and constructed phenomenon, the production of space emerges as a key analytical inquiry. This thesis focuses on this question by conducting ethnographic research. By doing so, it aims to elucidate how broader socio-political agencies intersect with micro-level local dynamics to shape the urban experience for both existing residents and newcomers. Therefore, the study aims to unveil the question of how the socio-cultural urban settings of Fatih have been produced and reproduced by existing residents and new inhabitants. This entails deciphering the multi-layered process of space production, which is constructed upon the interplay of macro and micro-level dynamics. By examining the affinitive interactions between various actors within the urban landscape, the study sheds light on the complex mechanisms driving the production and reproduction of space in Fatih. In this thesis, the close relationship of the Islamic religion with the production of space, significant migrant networks and the role of the concept of governmentality in the production of space stand out as the primary dimensions of the discussion on space and migration. These factors, which shape migrants' preferences and settlement dynamics, play a decisive role in the processes of forming their identities, feeling belonging and establishing spatial ties. Within this framework, the thesis analyzes how religious practices, as well as social, political, and economic networks, contribute to the production of space in Fatih. Keywords: Everyday Life, Islam, Production of space, Migration, Governmentality, Syrian migrants
Modernity and the politics of food insecurity in Pakistan
Food is multidimensional in its impact and position in a society, and sociology as a wide framework encompassing multiple spectrums of thought is the most apt framework to study it. In the developing world, food insecurity has been a problem for ages, and Pakistan, as a developing country, has its stream of problems and factors that contribute to the persistence of this issue. Besides playing a crucial role in human sustenance, food can also be perceived as a modicum of achieving Weberian modernity in a society, where predictable and calculable measures of producing and distributing food can lead to a modern, efficient society. The downside of this can be a subsequent commodification of food, as identified by Frederick Magdoff, making it a product to be sold, rather than a human necessity. This is magnified by the dependence on the developed countries under the world-systems model, where food is imported based on interests that do not match the general public. While Pakistan identifies the importance of advancing the society systematically in the food sector, and there seems to be attempts to introduce greater predictability and calculability in the agricultural industry, its various issues, such as an unpredictable, unchecked increase in population, thrust the country back into food insecurity. Combined with another Weberian nemesis of a modern society; the lack of adequate awareness and knowledge leads the country into a situation where food is no doubt commodified, but without the achievement of modernizing the sector or society as desired, giving rise to other problems such as impersonality of farmers, while sustaining it is already present problems. Secondary data analysis is used to conduct this research, and it contributes by providing an insight into the different factors of food insecurity, using data from vi the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics, the World Bank, the United Nations, The Economist, and the World Food Program.
The role of religion in the cohesion of the Taliban movement in Afghanistan (1994-2021)
This study explores the religious factors that contributed to the cohesion of the Taliban movement in Afghanistan. It is one of the rare cases in modern times where a social movement successfully seized power twice within 25 years under entirely different circumstances. The first time was in the context of a civil war and the second came after a two-decade war against a large international coalition led by the United States. I used a qualitative method, conducting semi-structured interviews with 13 participants, including a Taliban leader, Islamists, foreign fighters, academicians, journalists, and former political prisoners. The findings showed how Islam, specifically in its traditional form contributed heavily to the cohesion of the Taliban movement more than any other social, ethnic, or political factors. The study also challenged the common view in the literature that overemphasizes the link between the Taliban and the Deobandi movement, ideologically or politically. It also highlighted that the consistency in implementing Sharia law, rather than flexibility (as some literature suggests), was one of the primary reasons for the Taliban's high recruitment capacity. The leader-centric organizational structure, rooted in the classical Islamic Emirate, and the key role of religious scholars were vital in maintaining unity, even as the movement shifted to a decentralized model. This structure also distinguished the Taliban from other movements with similar religious structures. Additionally, the study highlighted the complex interaction between foreign mujahid organizations and the Taliban, including areas of support, along with tensions and clashes. These religious factors were analyzed through Ibn Khaldun's asabiyyah theory, demonstrating its relevance for understanding similar movements.
Archaeology of de-democratization: Mobilizing the pharaonic past in post-2013 counterrevolutionary Egypt
Social sciences scholarship on the relationship between narrative production and power relations has extended to include analyses of urban space, archaeology, and national cultural events. This dissertation critically examines the Pharaonic historical narrative employed by the post-2013 Egyptian state in its governmental projects and events, focusing on the Tahrir Square urban development (2020) and the Pharaohs' Golden Parade (2021). Despite their strategic and deliberate connection, these two events have often been studied in isolation. While critical studies on Tahrir Square primarily emphasize the erasure of its revolutionary narrative and symbolism, little attention has been given to its newly imposed narrative and symbolism in relation to the broader socio-political power structure after 2013. Similarly, the parade spectacle has largely been analyzed as a tourism-boosting strategy internationally and a cultural pride-fostering initiative nationally. Using critical discourse analysis and a synthesized theoretical framework drawn from three power theorists—C. Wright Mills, Michael Mann, and Pierre Bourdieu—this dissertation examines these state projects as relational, connecting them to Irfan Ahmad's concept of de-democratization, as their wider objective. Critical discourse analysis is used to analyze the official discourses and narratives of these two events drawn from pro-government news, governmental websites, and governmental social media feeds. By synthesizing Mills' conceptualization of military power elite strategies, Mann's notions of authoritarian structure and infrastructural power, and Bourdieu's concept of symbolic power, I argue that the post-2013 military regime mobilizes the Pharaonic past through archaeology to marginalize and suppress the revolutionary past. Through the material and symbolic replacement of the revolution-based historical narrative with a Pharaonic-based historical narrative, as manifested in the Tahrir Square urban development project and the Pharaohs' Golden Parade mega-event, the regime is actively engaging in de-democratizing the historical narrative both materially and symbolically, to shape the past as well as the future.
Dialectics of faith and global governance: The vision of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation
The concept of Islamic unity has long been a focal point of discourse within Muslim societies, sparking profound deliberations on the feasibility of fulfilling this divine mandate. This dialogue has significantly influenced the establishment and evolution of institutions such as the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), a 57-member intergovernmental body grounded in Islamic principles. The OIC's primary mission is to represent the collective voice of the Muslim world, safeguard its interests, and promote international peace and harmony among diverse global communities. This study investigates the complex process of integrating an Islamic institution into the broader ecosystem of international organizations, focusing on how the OIC navigates its role as an Islamic institution within the global framework of intergovernmental organizations. It examines the OIC's stances on foundational issues, its commitments, and the strategic narratives it adopts to sustain its legitimacy and advance Islamic unity in international diplomacy. As an organizational ethnography, the research aims to illuminate the challenges and opportunities inherent in advancing Islamic ideals within the realm of international politics. To investigate the OIC's positioning within the realm of international diplomacy, this study employed a critical discourse analysis methodology toward a comprehensive examination of official documents, speeches, and reports produced by the OIC and proponents of the international system. By systematically analyzing the language, themes, and rhetorical strategies present in these texts, the study reveals the underlying ideologies and dynamics that inform the OIC's Islamic discourses. In probing these questions, this inquiry not only revealed the ongoing dialectical evolution that characterizes the OIC but also provided nuanced insights into the interplay between Islamic unity, international diplomacy, and the quest for legitimacy in the contemporary global landscape.
The Islamic bloc in Palestinian universities: Student resistance, mobilization, and political opportunity structures
In this research, I aim to contribute to the analysis of the Palestinian student movement's transformation towards resistance, concentrating on the Islamic Bloc (IB), by answering the question: How does the relationship of the Palestinian student movement with the socio-political players (Universities administrative, Palestinian factions, Palestinian Authorities, and Israeli Authorities) affect the student movement's transformations towards resistance and its ability to mobilize adherents and lead collective actions? To answer the main research question, qualitative research methods are employed to collect and analyze primary sources and data from the organization's establishment through 2021. Unstructured interviews are conducted to collect important data, relying on the oral history methodology. These interviews are analyzed by using the positioning theory as explained by Harré and Langenhove. This study considers the period between 1980, the year in which the IB was officially established, and 2021 when the battle of Seif Al-Quds took place which established a new era of the Palestinian armed resistance. Driven by social movement theory, I intend to provide a view of the shifts in framing process for such a social movement. Keeping in mind that it is important to understand the relationship between the sources of social mobilization at key historic turning points, I shed the lights on the following periods: the first Intifada, the Oslo agreements, the Palestinian division, and the wars on Gaza, to explain the factors of continuity and change of the student movement in Palestinian territories.
Coping strategies of Aleppian elder parents from an intergenerational perspective: Aleppo and Istanbul
Scholars in sociology extensively explored the repercussions of deteriorating familial bonds, particularly the decline of collective consciousness associated with paternal or ancestral authority, on the individual psyche of the standardized western individual. Interest in elderly individuals as a subject of research emerged only after prolonged self-reflection within the field of sociology. Besides that, migration studies had further marginalised old age, especially the case of left-behind. This study endeavours to address a gap within gerontology and migration studies, specifically concerning the treatment of "non-normative" elder individuals, and to challenge the positivistic methodologies employed in contemporary gerontology and transnational studies. It explores the coping strategies of Aleppian elder parents who remained in Aleppo with few monitoring examples from those who reside in Istanbul with their children. By integrating intergenerational solidarity and ambivalence theory, and incorporating phenomenological insights, this thesis show how intergenerational relationships and the desire for familial cohesion in later life shape the explored coping strategies of elder parents—namely, technological mediation, religious engagement, and personal perceptions of place and belonging.
Understanding changes in urban dynamics and the discussions surrounding reconstruction process in post-earthquake Antakya
On February 6-7, 2023, the earthquakes centered in Kahramanmaraş caused unprecedented destruction in Antakya, significantly altering the city's social, cultural, and physical fabric. This study aims to understand the transformations in Antakya's social and cultural structure following the earthquake and to examine the extent to which the local population's expectations, desires, and concerns align with the reconstruction process. Using qualitative research methods, fieldwork was conducted, and semi-structured interviews were carried out to investigate changes in the lives of residents before and after the earthquake, as well as their perspectives on the reconstruction process. Additionally, publications by the state and relevant institutions regarding the reconstruction process were analyzed to understand the planning framework, while discussions were further expanded through social media accounts, news websites, and YouTube videos. Findings indicate that, before the earthquake, Antakya was culturally, ethnically, and demographically diverse, supported by strong solidarity networks. The local population demonstrated a deep attachment to their neighborhoods and Antakya. However, the earthquake disrupted these social bonds, leading to fractures within the community. While the state's reserved area policy and centralized reconstruction, efforts helped restore the housing stock relatively quickly and met some expectations, non-participatory planning processes, reserved area policies, and uniform housing developments generated discontent among certain vii segments of the population. Issues such as loss of belonging, alienation, replacing use value with exchange value, the erasure of neighborhood boundaries, and uncertainties regarding property rights have been observed. In conclusion, while reconstruction efforts have accelerated the return to normalcy in Antakya, the "normal" being re- established appears to be a somewhat alienated reality for the local population. Veiled discriminations- A sociological study on the perceived marginalizations experienced by veiled teachers at private educational institutes in Türkiye
This study is an attempt to examine an often-covert discrimination held against veiled Muslim educators who apply at Turkish Private Schools. Paramount to this work is that this occurs within the private education sector, which often caters to wealthier, upper middle-class parents. Türkiye's most sought-after, well-established educational institutes produce students who often go on to occupy positions of power in Turkish society. The historical socio-cultural influence of these schools is thus an important part of the study to situate the problem and understand its underlying historical and dynamics. As evidenced from the research, hiring practices of elite private schools continue to be skewed towards Eurocentric-looking teachers, a clear indicator of the promotion of a divisive ideology. The overarching aims of this research is to unveil a) the nature of religious marginalization in Turkey, as evidenced by the discrimination in the hiring process and employment of veiled teachers in private education b) to theoretically dissect the reasoning behind this 'transformational paralysis' phenomenon perpetrated by private educational entities with regards to changes in society and finally c) to show the kind of impact education can have in society via the perpetuation of divisive ideologies. The methodology for this work is a mixed qualitative approach that relies on a historical analysis around the history of private schooling in Türkiye, a questionnaire, interviews with teachers and administration at schools, in addition to a visual ethnography of schools' websites and galleries. In conclusion, the research indicates that veiled teachers are being discriminated against when being interviewed for job positions at wealthy private schools and that religious visibility at many private educational institutes is not welcome. Key words: Headscarf Discrimination, Private education, Divisive Ideology, Transformational Paralysis
Decolonizing the self through embracing Islam: Narratives of Muslim reverts based in Istanbul and beyond
The critique of materialism as a dominant political and sociological value system — one that reduces human existence to material existence — has been extensively explored, particularly by Muslim intellectuals who position Islamic teachings and principles as an alternative worldview. While much of this discourse remains theoretical, this dissertation is grounded empirically by examining how materialism shapes the modern self and how embracing Islam enables emancipation in the lived experiences of 22 Muslim reverts from diverse backgrounds. This study investigates the spiritual and social disconnections, the impact of adopting the negative notion of freedom, and the impounding of innate values as consequences of a materialistic perspective. Besides, examining the influence of embracing Islam in restoring spiritual and social dimensions, adopting a positive view of freedom and liberation of human values as a decolonial consequence of Islamic views. Engaging with Thomas Hobbes' materialist perspective, Abdelwahab El-Messiri's critique of secular modernity, and Taha Abdurrahman's Islamic ethical philosophy, this study constructs a theoretical framework for analyzing the narratives of reverts. Through thematic analysis of the interviews, the study reveals how materialism had a colonial disintegrative impact on the self through depriving people of its unseen component. Through such a component, they can purify themselves and transcend to non-material worlds, which is what Islam has presented to its followers not only as religious doctrine but as a comprehensive way of life. The study provides valuable insights into the extent of the colonial influence of materialism on the self and how religion, particularly Islam, constitutes a way of resistance and reclaiming of self.
Gathering knowledge, shaping selves:Ethnographic insights into young arab women's informal-learning experiences in Istanbul
This ethnographic study explores the informal-learning and knowledge-sharing practices among young Arab women in Istanbul and how that helps them build a community. Focusing on women from Syria, Iraq, Palestine, Yaman, Libya, Lebanon, and Egypt, with the shared identity of being Muslim and being Arab. It examines how these gatherings—ranging from religious study circles to book clubs or lectures on politics, history and social issues—serve as critical spaces for education, meaning-making, identity formation, and collective healing in the context of migration and displacement. This ethnographic research is grounded in participant observation and semi-structured interviews with 15 young women who regularly attend these gatherings; on a weekly basis. I also drew on digital ethnography to understand how participants extend their engagement and community-making through WhatsApp, Telegram groups and social media platforms. The gatherings, often held in cultural centres, coffee shops, waqf organizations, homes, mosques, or, parks allow participants to navigate the complexities of migration, religiosity, and gather empirical knowledge from great scholars in the fields of religion, politics, history, social issues and life skills; like self-management, interpersonal communication, cross-cultural adjustment, emotional intelligence, while articulating new forms of belonging and self-understanding. They are building a community that helps them on an external level and an internal level at the same time. Theoretically, the study is informed by Ibn Khaldun's concept of asabiyyah (social solidarity), Bourdieu's theory of social capital, to analyse how these young women form new friendships, build a community and find new opportunities. While also gaining empirical knowledge on topics like religion, politics and self-development or growth. I argue that these learning circles function as both epistemic communities and affective sanctuaries; where participants come together and articulate new forms of belonging, co-create meaning, reshape the terms of their agency, cultivate resilience, create a new sense of home and find visibility within both the host society and their diasporic imaginaries. This study adds to the limited sociological literature on young Arab women's experiences in Istanbul when it comes to informal-learning and community building in migration contexts and highlights the importance of everyday spaces in cultivating resilience and fostering hope, agency and community while also reimagining futures. Keywords: informal-learning, Arab migrants, women's learning circles, ,asabiyyah, social capital.
