The impact of the European Union membership on human development progress of candidate countries: Albania and Serbia

The European Union (EU) membership process is one of the main factors shaping the reform process and evolution of institutions in the Western Balkan countries. Following the end of the conflicts in the region in the 1990s, the EU membership process started for the countries in the region. The major question of the thesis concerns how the Western Balkan countries' economic and political institutions, which are also the major targets of the EU membership conditionality driven reform process, have developed and to what extent the reform process in these institutions relate to the human development in these countries. For this purpose, the literature on the institutional economics school is reviewed and the indicators related to the economic and political institutions of the Western Balkan countries are identified and demonstrated by years. Further, the progress in the human development index during these countries institituional reform process is also presented. In light of the observed difference in human development index values among the EU candidate countries' variance in reform process, Albania and Serbia are chosen for case study to examine the major question of the thesis. The findings of the study indicate that the EU's key priorities for full membership coincide particularly with the quality of institutions and democracy emphasized by the institutionalist economics. This thesis concludes that the reason for the difference in the progress of Albania and Serbia in terms of human development approach during the membership process is international integration.

The European Union in global climate governance: A "Critical" role for the climate negotiations

This thesis aims to examine global climate governance and the role of the European Union (EU) throughout the Conference of Parties (COP) negotiations as the main supreme body of the United Nations Convention Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). This thesis considers analytical frames introduced in the literature, such as the "norm life cycle" and reinterprets the EU's role in climate politics within the scope of constructivist arguments. The findings reveal that the EU's role in global climate governance is related to a normative framework based on its claim of a "leading by example" role given its productive policies and consistent position addressing the significance of climate change during the COP negotiations. The EU's official discourse is traced during the selected COP negotiations that demonstrate its pledges and commitments reinforcing the legitimacy of the climate regime. These findings highlight the importance of legitimacy and authority in advancing climate governance and in the EU's role in the process.

Reinvestigating the state debate during the energy transition in the USA

This thesis examines the role of the American state during the energy transition process. Immanuel Wallerstein claimed that, since 1968, the American power weakens. Wallerstein showed that despite the American State's strategies for preventing the decline in American power in capitalism historically, its hegemony continues to be eroded. The energy transition process could be an opportunity for the United States of America (USA) for reinforcing its hegemony. The USA's economy is largely based on fossil fuel supplies, but, in the last decades, the share of renewable energy sources in electricity production increased significantly. Although there has been a continuous energy transition in the USA, there were different approaches in the USA's government policy regarding rising conflicts among different producers and consumers during the energy transition in the last decade. These different approaches stem from the role of state in responding to the conflicts between the fractions of the capitalist class. In this research, I analyzed the actors of the American state and their different approaches to demonstrate the role of state in the on-going power struggle in capitalism during energy transition within the case of the USA historically. The USA's energy transition is mostly occurred in the electricity generation sector, and the change in relations of production observed in the electricity generation sector. Thus, I focused particularly on the electricity sector to investigate the policies of the state, which promote its hegemony, support some fractions of the capitalist class and punish some fractions of the capitalist class. I used Historical Materialist Policy Analysis to examine the discourses of the Obama Administration, the Trump Administration, the Biden Administration, and the Democrats and the Republicans in the Congress about the energy transition between 2008 and 2021 by acknowledging the continuities and changes in the historical position of the state within the context of the State Debate in Marxist studies.

Turkey's foreign direct investments: Factors determining foreign direct investments of Turkish firms in the energy sector

The aim of this thesis to examine the recent progress of the Turkish firms' internationalization in the observed new markets, namely African region, and energy sector. Thus, this study attempts to understand Turkish firms' major motivations of foreign direct investments (FDIs) and implications of, if any, the policy elite's foreign economic policy preferences on Turkey's outward FDI. My findings revealed that the motivations specific to the companies are market diversification, ensuring energy security, the institutional environment in Turkey, capabilities specific to Turkish companies and cultural affinity. Besides, in the light of the literature on Turkey's foreign policy to- wards the African region, not only firm-level factors, and motivations but also the position of the government in promoting or supporting the outward FDI of Turkish firms have been empirically questioned.
