Abstract (EN)
To understand the whole, you need to know the components that make it. This is one of the important reasons why the studies on Ottoman history in recent years are concentrated on cities. Each city, as part of the whole, contains the characteristics of the geographical conditions it is located in. For this reason, every study on Anatolian cities is also an important contribution to Ottoman history research. This thesis was aims to reveal the social and economic structure of the Teke sanjak in the mid-19th century. The main source used in the thesis is the Antalya Revenue Census (Temettüat) Books dated 1844-1845, conducted by household, with the values of the fields, vineyards, orchards, shops, houses, and livestock held by the households and the profits (divi¬dends) obtained from these being counted. In this thesis, the neighborhoods of Antalya city center where comprise 30 neighborhoods and 34 Revenue Census (Temettüat) Books is examined. The tables which were created as a result of transcribing the related Revenue Census (Temettüat) Books is supported and interpreted with various graphics and the demographic, social and economic structure of Antalya is examined. In the study, the inhabitants of the city where non-Muslims and Muslims live in their neighbourhoods are evaluated separately. It is believed that the thesis has contributed to the studies on the history of Antalya city. According to the data of 1844-1845, there were 1870 households with an estimated 9350 inhabitants. While %66,3 of the population was Muslim, %33,7 was non-Muslim. Non-Muslims settled only in four neighbourhoods. In this period, there were also a considerable of amount of Arab and Morean immigrants lived in the city. In the city center, where a wide range of different professions is seen, trading and crafting is more popular than agriculture and livestock. Although most households did not stock farming as basic subsistence activities, they feed animals to meet their own needs. The most common species of animals were beast of burden and riding animal. The sources of income of households are: livestock, agriculture, craft and rental income from real estates. The most profitable source was the income of the profession. Agricultural income was recorded as field and garden. Households paid %8,4 of the income from agricultural land as Islamic Tithe (Öşür), and paid %5 of the total income they received as "vergi-yi mahsûsa" (apportioned tax of Tanzimat Period).
