Abstract (EN)
This study aims to evaluate the aesthetic and ideological impacts of Soviet Montage Theory through the lens of Russian Avant-Garde film posters produced between 1917 and 1930. The posters examined in this research not only served the function of film promotion but also operated as powerful propaganda tools, disseminating Bolshevik ideology and socialist values to broad audiences. The analyses conducted reveal that Soviet Montage Theory initiated a profound transformation not only within the realm of cinematic art but also across the wider spectrum of visual communication practices. Particularly within film posters, montage techniques were systematically employed to construct new layers of meaning within the emotional and intellectual worlds of the viewers. The semiotic and aesthetic analyses carried out on the 17 selected film posters demonstrate that the fundamental principles of montage theory were consistently applied throughout these visual compositions. Design elements such as diagonal lines, striking color contrasts, geometric forms, and the integration of text and image did not merely establish an aesthetic order; they also aimed to awaken political consciousness among the viewers. At this point, it becomes evident that key concepts of Soviet Montage Theory such as "the collision of opposites," "intellectual montage," and "the generation of new meanings" were actively utilized as tools of ideological guidance within the posters. The analysis of color usage also indicates a deliberate and conscious selection process in Soviet posters. While black and red were predominantly employed to symbolize revolutionary spirit and the desire for struggle, yellow, orange, and blue tones reflected themes of hope for the future and aspirations for societal transformation. Furthermore, the use of icons, indices, and symbols within these posters directly referenced political ideals, creating a powerful emotional resonance in the viewer's perception. For instance, revolutionary worker figures, images of battleships, and representations of mortgage documents functioned as symbolic elements calling the masses to action against the existing order. In this context, Soviet film posters should not be perceived as passive promotional materials; rather, they must be recognized as active visual texts designed to direct, mobilize, and persuade the masses toward the vision of a new socialist society. During this period, when art and ideology were deeply intertwined, montage techniques served not only as aesthetic innovations but also as effective instruments of political intervention. In conclusion, Soviet Montage Theory created a radical rupture within 20th-century visual culture, catalyzing an intellectual revolution that extended beyond cinematic arts to include poster design and propaganda techniques. This study reveals that Soviet film posters successfully reflected the social and political atmosphere of their era on both aesthetic and ideological levels, while also demonstrating the transformative role of montage aesthetics in turning artistic production into a vehicle for ideological dissemination.
