Hybridization in the painting-ceramic union after 1960

The concept of "hybridity" is known to come from the Latin root "hybrida". Its equivalent is used for a new species formed by the combination of two different species. The concept of "Hybridity", which is mostly used in Biology, has found a place in different fields over time. As a matter of fact, the most important example of this was the use of the word hybrid in plastic arts, especially in the 1960s and later years. Although the use of hybridity in the Cubism art movement during the modern art period appears as "unconscious hybrid art", it is frequently encountered in art examples from the 1960s to the present day. This hybrid formation is seen in plastic arts, especially in examples where ceramics and painting are together. In this research, this dimension of the concept of "hybridity" was examined. Art trends after 1960 were examined and hybrid examples were examined. How the unique art forms of painting-ceramics or ceramics-painting disciplines, such as expression and theme, material and technique, create a hybrid form of expression has been examined on sample works. National and international contemporary artists were identified and the works of some of these artists reflecting the hybrid understanding of art were analyzed. In addition, the works of foreign and Turkish artists, which were discussed using written and visual sources through literature review, were evaluated within the scope of hybridity and their reflections in contemporary art were examined. In addition, a few case studies from personal applications were created within the scope of the thesis study. The hybrid phenomenon that emerged as a result of the blending of the materials and techniques of painting and ceramics in these works was examined.
