Abstract (EN)

This thesis deals with how space in the 20th century Turkish painting has been constructed and abstracted. During the related researches, the development of the abstract, its introduction into Turkish art and its origins have been examined. In the first part, the definition of space, the factors that influence the formation of space and the way they are fictionalized in painting have been analyzed. Also, the relationship between space and surface from the Renaissance onward has been examined. In the second part where the abstract and the concept of abstraction have been studied, the place of the abstract in visual arts and its adventure until the 20th century has been dealt with. Especially it has been elaborated upon the art of Kandinsky and Malevich with their contribution to abstract art and its development being analyzed. The influence and contribution of Modern Art that became widespread in 1930s to abstract art have also been examined. The process experienced by abstract art starting with the Çallı generation, having an important place in the origin of Turkish abstract painting has been studied. The way artists have constructed the concept of space in their works has also been examined. The development of abstract art starting form 1914 with the Çallı generation and continuing with independent painters and D group artists has been researched. Also, the workshops by artists who went abroad after the declaration of the Republic have been examined. Next, technical and topical changes in Turkish painting in `60s and `80s have been studied together with their influence on Turkish painting.Especially the analysis of how the space and the abstract have been handled from the perspectives of both plastic and thought in Turkish painting after 1980s have helped me mold my own perspective of art. With a distance from the common and ordinary concept of space, the plastic potential of creating infinite spaces has been questioned. As visual documents, the works produced independent of a space or an object intrinsic to conceptual art has provided the thesis with integrity.
