Abstract (EN)

Our country has regions that are frequently at risk of earthquakes. Earthquakes can cause permanent damage to many structures, including both superstructures and infrastructures. As a result of this damage, our national wealth is seriously affected, and our country incurs significant long-term costs due to the destructive effects of earthquakes. The functionality of infrastructure facilities is crucial for quickly recovering from earthquakes. This thesis considers pipe types and manufacturing methods used in sewerage systems as a whole, and determines the damages that occurred in the sewerage lines in Erciş district after the 2011 Van Earthquake. To determine the damages, images were taken from the sewerage lines using a CCVT imaging tool. The study detected damages in the images and determined the extent of the damage. The images were taken for approximately 13 hours. In some cases, no usable data could be obtained due to the degree of damage. The images were analysed, and a sewerage damage scale was created, which was not previously available in the literature. Using this scale, the damages to the sewerage lines were analysed and classified into three categories: light, medium, and heavy damage. The study created coordinate data for damaged sewerage lines and identified potential causes of damage. Relationships between damages and proximity to earthquake epicentres, fault lines, soil types, and ground water levels were examined. The study determined necessary precautions to prevent post-earthquake damages in new wastewater infrastructure systems. It has been determined that using pipes with high earthquake performance is more beneficial than using concrete or reinforced concrete pipes, especially in areas up to 5 metres below the ground water level and in areas corresponding to alluvial soil. In areas where there is a high potential for permanent displacement movements, it is recommended to use more flexible pipe types. It is important to avoid designing sewerage collector and collector lines in areas with high damage potential to enable effective disaster management after an earthquake.
