Earthquake education according to social studies teachers who experienced the February 6 2023 earthquake

The study purpose is to determine how earthquake education should be in social studies according to the social studies teachers who experienced the February 6earthquake centered Kahramanmaraş. The study employed the case study method, one of the qualitative research methods. The study group consisted of 42 social studies teachers teaching in middle schools affiliated with the Ministry of National Education in the city of Hatay and its districts in the spring semester of the 2023-2024 academic year. 22 of the teachers were male and 20 were female. Maximum diversity sampling, one of the purposeful sampling methods, was used to determine the study group. In the study, a semi-structured interview form developed by the researcher was used as the data collection tool. The form had two sections. The first section of the form included questions about participants' demographic information, and the second part included semi-structured study questions. In data analysis, content analysis method, one of the qualitative data analysis methods, was used. The examination of the study findings revealed that social studies teachers stated views on the use of materials, practice, trips, simulations, nature and expert categories in earthquake education. Social studies teachers evaluated the February 6 earthquake as a "Disaster". Twenty-one of the social studies teachers had not received earthquake training. Also, five social studies teachers had not received earthquake preparation training at their schools. Social studies teachers mostly used the lecture method and smart boards as tools in earthquake training. Social studies teachers had the most problems in earthquake education related to space. It was concluded that social studies teachers regardedthe earthquake education in the Social Studies Curriculum as inadequate. Recommendations were made in the light of the study findings.
