Abstract (EN)
Aim of this survey is to determine the development levels of reading and writing skills of students, attending second grade in primary school, who started the first grade of primary school at the age of 60-66 months. Descriptive and content analysis are used in this survey which are both the techniques of screening model. The study group of this survey consists of 38 students who started first grade of primary school at the age of 60-66 months and who are now attending the second grade of Atatürk Primary School and Aybey Primary School in 2013-2014 educational year in Uşak. Reading texts, video records including the reading performance of students, questions related to the reading texts, predetermined texts to be writing by student, wrong analysis inventory, dictionary of spelling and multidimensional legibility scale (Yıldız & Ateş, 2007) are used as data collection tools in this survey. Reading and writing texts are selected from second grade course books approved by Ministry of Education, Board of Education and Discipline. Questions related to reading texts are prepared by the researcher after consulting expert opinion. In data analysis, "arithmetic mean" "percentage" and "frequency" values are used. According to the result of survey, it is stated that students who started the first grade of primary school at the age of 60-66 months do not have the required reading and writing skills as they are attending the second grade. It is also stated that students are far behind their required progress especially in terms of comprehension and legibilty. The result of this survey should be evaluated considering the fact that first graders get reading and writing skills in second term of the educational year. From this point of view, this survey is thought to contribute to this field of literature and application of other studies. Keywords: 60-66 months, second graders, age of attending to school, reading, writing
