Abstract (EN)
Mass communication is an indirect communication process that enables information and news to be announced to large groups of people with the help of different tools. Television is a comparatively widespread mass communication tool with some features that distinguish it from other tools. Television broadcasts began in the UK in 1936, which was later introduced in the USA, has developed within the framework of different broadcasting approaches in these two countries. Public service broadcasting, which was adopted in European countries and Turkey before the transformations in the 1980s, is a correspondence concept built around the concepts of "informing, educating and entertaining". In the USA, on the other hand, television broadcasting has been seen as a commercial activity since its inception. In the 1980s, restructuring policies and changing economic models brought about commercialization on television. In Turkey, this change was felt when the first private television started broadcasting. The 90s is one of the periods that can be called a turning point in which new concepts emerged. Changes in the understanding of broadcasting led to a transformation in visual language. The serious atmosphere of public service broadcasting was abandoned, and a fast, dynamic, and colorful world came to television screens in terms of both form and content. As the first commercial television channel, Magic Box was established in 1990 without a legal infrastructure. This change, which effectively ended TRT's monopoly as Turkey's public service broadcaster, had an impact on a variety of industries. New program types and formats have entered the lives of the audience, increasing diversity and foreign dependency in all genres. One of these genres is children's broadcasting. Cartoons and series have a great place in children's programming. In this study, the limitation of the research is the animated series broadcasted on Turkish television in the 1990s. The data of the animated series broadcasted on free-to-air Turkish television channels between 1990-1999 were accessed by scanning method and this information was classified and statistics were obtained. Finally, the visual language analysis of the cartoon series in the selected sample was carried out in the context of the proposed method.
