Istanbul daussila in the works of Abdulhak Şinasi Hisar and Mario Levi

The goal of this thesis is to examine and compare the works of Abdülhak Şinasi Hisar and Mario Levi in the context of space-culture-identity and "Istanbul-daüssıla" (yearning for Istanbul). The study consists of four sections. First section deals with the question of "what is space?". The relationship of space to time and human is investigated; and its importance is evaluated with regard to the concepts of society-culture-identity, from a psychological and historical perspective. Next, in the scope of all these relationships, the relation of literature –and therefore of writers– to space is addressed through analyses of examples from Turkish and World Literature, while also providing information regarding the methods utilized in studies that have an academic focus on literature and space. The second section of the thesis defines and elaborates on the concept of "daüssıla" (homesickness/yearning), classifying it in the context of relationships between human-time and space. The third section analyzes the works of Abdulhak Şinasi Hisar, presenting a general idea concerning his works and their prominent characteristics. The fourth section analyzes Mario Levi's works in the same way with the same methods. As a result of these analyses, and in the scope of society-culture-identity, the conclusion compares the relationship of both writers to space, and especially to Istanbul and Istanbul-daüssıla –which is a concept that deals with both these elements–; and points out and evaluates the common and distinguishing characteristics of these authors.
