Examination of the problems experienced by emergency service nurse: A qualitative study

Nursing practices in emergency departments and nursing practices in other clinical areas are similar, but affecting treatment and care interventions; there are many problems such as limited time, emergency situations of patients, traumatic injuries due to accidents and natural disasters, insufficient information, lack of effective triage, inappropriate and unnecessary referrals, facilities in the emergency room, the necessity of working in front of the patient's relatives, administrators and other healthcare professionals. There are many dependent elements. These factors not only complicate the duties and practices of nurses, but also bring them face to face with many problems. The research was planned and conducted in a qualitative (phenomenological) type in order to examine the problems experienced by nurses working in the emergency services. The population of the study consisted of nurses (N=22) working in the emergency department of Izmir Provincial Health Directorate Tire State Hospital between November 2021 and February 2022. Its sample is; 20 nurses who agreed to participate in the study on a voluntary basis. Demographic Data Form and Semi-Structured Interview Form, which includes the characteristics of emergency nurses, were used as data collection tools in the study. Research data were collected using a voice recorder and transferred to Word of Windows file by transcription method. The data obtained in the research were evaluated using the content analysis method. The average age of the nurses participating in the research is 35.55%, 95% are women, 55% are married, 60% have a bachelor's degree, the average working time in the emergency department is 8.41 years, and 80% of them have a 24-hour shift system. was found to be working with Experienced in the emergency department; Violence, excessive patient density, inadequate security measures, inability to carry out nursing practices and care, occupational accidents, overtime, ineffective triage, excessive personnel circulation, inability to provide patient privacy, lack of communication between the manager-employee-patient relatives. It was determined that it was caused by inadequate physical environment conditions, inadequate security measures, insufficient number of polyclinics and communication related problems.
