Abstract (EN)

ABSTRACT Objective: Emergency service is the health unit where the traumas are first met and first medical care is applied. Trauma describes a wide range of events, but it describes a more delicate condition in certain patient groups. In the geriatric population, body response to trauma changes as well as age-altering physiology. Trauma algorithms in geriatric patient populations are of greater importance due to this changing physiology. We studied the relationship between the geriatric patient population and the revised trauma score. Materials and Methods: In this study, traumatized patients were investigated in the Emergency Service in Yildirim Beyazit University, Ankara Atatürk Education and Research Hospital between the dates of 01/12 / 2017 and 31/05/2018. The patients' consciousness, blood pressure, number of respiration, age, sex, arrival symptom, where they came from, other demographic features, additional diseases, hospitalization status and outcomes and revised trauma scores were recorded. Findings: This study included 229 patients. 153 of study patients were female (66.8%), and 76 of them were male (33.2%). The mean age of the patients was 79 ± 8 (median age = 79, range = 65-99). According to the results, RTS distributions of the patients (discharge, hospitalization, exitus) were found to be different (p <0.001). In the posthoc analysis performed, the difference was found to occur from all three groups (p <0.001 for each pairwise comparison). The RTS scores were the lowest in the exitus group, while they were found to be the highest in the discharge group. RTS was recorded statistically significantly lower in the mortal group (p <0.001) when the patients were divided into two groups: alive and mortal, according to the 28-day mortality. Conclusion: The elderly population is increasing in our country by virtue of the developing living standards. As a result, the elderly population is more likely to be exposed to trauma. Therefore, the elderly trauma patients deserve a multidisciplinary approach and treatment due to the factors such as the presence of additional diseases, multiple drug use, and inadequate biological and physiological reserves.
