Open science and academics' attitudes to open science: The case of Batman University

Humanity has needed access to information since the universe existed. First of all, accessibility of scientific information is important for everyone who produces scientific information, publishes academic publications and needs access to scientific information. In this context, university libraries, which form the basis of higher education, and the Council of Higher Education (YÖK), established for the scientific supervision of universities in Turkey, play an important role in accessing scientific information. In our country, there are problems in the accessibility of scientific publications and the dissemination of academic knowledge. The purpose of YÖK's efforts to solve these problems is that each university creates an open access archive within its own body and tries to support open access archives with an open access policy. At the same time, free access archives have begun to be created in universities in order to enable access to scientific information in accordance with a certain systematic. In this process, YÖK started to regularly collect information about university open access archives and policies based on university practices. Open access publishing has emerged as an alternative model to traditional/commercial publishing and has been developed to eliminate some of the problems faced by scientific communication. Prior to the open access phenomenon, print journals and publications were priced very high and subscription numbers were constantly falling. Many libraries were negatively affected by this process and had to give up many magazine subscriptions. This situation makes it difficult for libraries, which have an important role in providing up-to-date information to their users, to provide the necessary information and encourages them to conduct new research. In order to eliminate these problems, publishing models called "Golden Path" and "Green Path" have been developed. It is thought that the vast majority of researchers are not fully aware of the facts and benefits of Open Science and Open Access, which are very useful for scientific communication. Therefore, it is necessary to develop and/or sensitize researchers/teachers. In this study, open access, open science and open data development, types and functions, advantages, open access, open science and open data guides, copyrights, open access and open science policies and legislation, characteristics of open access archives in Turkey, open access libraries in Turkey In this study, its place in access, Batman University institutional open archive (KAA) studies and the knowledge level of the instructors on this subject will be investigated. The main purpose of the research is to investigate the development of open access archives in the world and in Turkey, to determine the awareness of the instructors about the effective use of WAA, and to reveal the attitudes and views of the instructors. With this research, it is aimed to obtain data about the infrastructure that will facilitate the development of WAA in Batman University. One of the indirect aims of the study is to raise awareness of the instructors and to make use of quality open access publications and to make their publications open access. At the same time, it is thought that the results of the research to be announced in order to raise public awareness will guide the CAA administrators of other universities. Questionnaire techniques were used to determine the awareness levels of faculty members on Open Access and Open Science. Data collected from different types of participants were analyzed using SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences). With this study, it has been determined that the level of Open Science and Open Access knowledge among the faculty members of Batman University is low and they do not have detailed information about the subject, although they think that they have knowledge about Open Science and Open Access. In order to increase institutional awareness for Open Science and Open Access phenomenon, "seminars", "briefings", "conferences", "in-service trainings", "subject-oriented research" and "orientation studies" should be offered to lecturers and researchers. It has been determined that although the lecturers do not have detailed information about Open Science and Open Access phenomena, they do not have prejudices against Open Science and Open Access phenomena.
