Abstract (EN)

Numerous studies have been carried out in the fields of personality and motivation. However, the studies on associating personality and motivation with skills are limited in our country. The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of the personality traits of the performers of sports requiring open or closed skills on sport motivation by using the Basic Personality Scale and Sport Motivation Scale for the Turkish Culture. It is aimed to contribute to the selection of athletes, selection of the sport branches of the athletes, and the process of their continuity in sports through the results concluded from this study relating to the motivation of athletes and personality traits. Athletes participating in the sports requiring open skill (wrestling, bowing, taekwondo, fencing, badminton, tennis, judo, karate, table tennis) and athletes participating in the sports requiring closed skills (weight lifting, archery, shooting, bocce, billiards, swimming, chess) took part in this study. The sample of the study comprised of 239 athletes that have become national representatives in the branches of judo, taekwondo, shooting, wrestling, table tennis, boxing, weight lifting, tennis, swimming, karate, bocce, billiards, chess, and badminton. Totally 239 athletes, who include 98 women and 141 men and who have become national athletes, participated in the study. In comparing the athletes that require open skills and the athletes that require closed skills, the personality traits and motivation aspects of the variables of sex, age, educational status, sports age, age of national sports were separately dealt with and partial correlation analysis, regression analysis and binary.Open and closed personality types of athletes who perform sports that require skill, no statistically significant differences were found on the motivation of athletes.
