Examination of the faction roses found in the Ahmed Karahisari mushaf in terms of illumination design and current designs

In the 16th century, the Ottoman Empire experienced a golden age in science, architecture and the arts, producing works that reflected their unique character and inspired future generations. This thesis examines the design of the faction motifs in the manuscript of the renowned Ottoman calligrapher Ahmed Karahisari in detail, exploring how traditional designs can be reinterpreted within contemporary design perspectives. Illumination art holds a significant place within Islamic arts, attracting attention with its aesthetic elements. In this context, the aim of the study is to analyze the design features of faction motifs, which hold historical and artistic value, and to offer new approaches suitable for modern design perspectives while achieving artistic gains in the digital realm. The study focuses on Ahmed Karahisari's life, works, his students and the illumination techniques used in his Mushaf. The concept of illumination is discussed, motifs used in illumination art are described, and the embellishment of Qur'anic manuscripts with illuminations is examined. The compatibility of traditional motifs with contemporary art and design principles has been examined. The digital images of the Ahmed Karahisari Mushaf were requested and obtained from the Presidency of the Republic of Turkey, National Palaces Directorate. 65 digital images of faction roses registered under inventory number Hırka-ı Saadet 5 in the Topkapı Palace Manuscripts and Printed Works Collection have been obtained. Additionally, a facsimile of the work has been obtained. In this way, detailed studies have been conducted on the faction roses of the work, patterns have been examined, drawn using digital drawing programs, and analyzed.
