A thematic analysis of the 2022 children's book list (ages 7-12) published by the ministry of Family and Social Services

This thesis examines the historical development of children's literature and its relationship with cultural policies while analyzing the thematic and ideological aspects of children's book selection processes in Turkey. The study aims to analyze the books included in the "Child-Friendly Book" list, published by the Ministry of Family and Social Services in 2022 for children aged 7-12, to identify the values intended to be imparted to children and to assess the consistency of this list with Turkey's cultural policies. Focusing on book lists created by the state since the Republic era, the research explores thematic trends and value transmission in these lists. The books were categorized and analyzed thematically using content analysis. This study is limited to primary school-level books, excluding works aimed at younger or older age groups. A qualitative content analysis method was employed in the research, utilizing thematic evaluation and discourse analysis to identify key elements within the books. The findings highlight the influence of state policies on children's literature and explain how values are transmitted through these works. The study also assesses the diversity and inclusivity of the listed books. The primary findings indicate that most of the analyzed books emphasize traditional and national values. However, some inconsistencies with the state's current ideological orientation were identified. Additionally, certain gaps in diversity and inclusivity were observed. These results underscore the role of children's literature in shaping cultural identity and the impact of state-supported book lists on the transmission of societal values. The "Child-Friendly Book" list consists of 1,093 books. This study examines only those books designated for primary school children aged 7-12, selecting a sample of 248 books. A total of 14 themes were identified and analyzed in these books. This thesis contributes to the literature by demonstrating how state-created children's book lists are shaped in ideological and thematic contexts. By addressing the historical evolution of children's literature policies, the study serves as a guide for future research in this field.
