Abstract (EN)
The purpose of this study is to reveal the effects of the Russian and Turkish history of the German settlers who migrated to establish a colony in the Russian Empire, especially Volga region, with the 1762-1763 manifestos of Catherine the Great. German migration process contiuned from 1764 to 1862 to build colonies in the different parts of the Russian Empire. The Treaty of Küçük Kaynarca, the annexation of Crimea and the Treaty of Jassy made Russia's dominance permanent in the Volga region. Czarine Catharina the Great wanted to earn income and collect taxes from the uninhabited lands conquered from the Ottoman Empire and Crimean Khanate; to pledge various privileges and rights for the German settlers. Due to political, economic and religious chaos lasting for many years in West Germany, privileges provided by Russian Empire appealed the German population. German intellect and experts took part in the shaping of Russian modernization in military, bureaucratic and scientific institutions. The Germans, who also served Russian Empire in the wars against the Ottoman Empire, left permanent marks in the history of Tsardom of Russia. The Volga Germans became a prominent factor in the relationship between Russia and Germany after Germany had completed the political union in 1881. German merchant elites, who contributed to the development of cultural, political and especially commercial policies built Germanness (Deutschtum im Ausland) institutions by forming public opinion. Germanness institutions organized many scientific expeditions to the Volga region and wrote reports including information about Turkic people. The Volga Germans, who lived more than 250 years in Volga region, developed cultural and commercial relations with Turkic people. This dissertation aims to bring new perspectives to the history of Volga Germans, by taking into consideration German and Russian archival sources. Keywords: Volga Germans, Catherine the Great, Colonization, Germanism, Turkic People Das Ziel der vorliegenden Arbeit ist es, die Auswirkungen der Manifeste von Katharina II.
