Abstract (EN)

People have benefited from the opportunities of nature to meet their shelter, eating and covering up for centuries Human being used and designed with the skin, feathers, bones of animals s/he hunted, or used the bark and branches of surrounding plants to meet his/her various needs. S/he produced threads from animal and vegetable fibres as well as from mineral fibres. S/he dyed the yarn produced in natural ways, and weaved and knitted it according to her/his needs, and as the technical skills developed in such production s/he embellished them made and attributed various meanings. When the needle and crochet knitting made in our country from past to present, is examined in handicrafts, we observe that the pattern features are similar to the pattern features used in other handicrafts. In patterning, plants, animals and various forms in nature were copied exactly or stylized, and used to decorate various products. While some patterns are used just for decoration, some patterns have many meanings. In particular, crochet lace and hand-knitted socks have been a means of nonverbal communication in Anatolia. The research aims to examine hand knitting and crochet, which are among the traditional handicrafts, as technique and pattern tool, to transform them to contemporary design to increase their use today and to be a source for future generations.
