The study of the relationship between emotional compe and professional personality traits of Anatolian and scien high school teachers on the basis of students perception

The main purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between theemotional competence and the characteristics of teachers as a person so as to discussthe contribution of socio-emotional skills that stem from emotional intelligence toeffective teaching.The sample of the study consisted of 798 students in 9th, 10th and 11th gradein Anatolian and science high schools in Sahinbey and Sehitkâmil, central districts inGaziantep. In order to gather data on the teachers? personality traits and emotionalcompetence, two separate inventories of Professional Personality Traits andEmotional Competence were administered to their students.Upon analyzing the data, it was found out that the teachers were partiallycompetent in both professional personality traits and emotional competence. Thestudy showed that gender variable was not a distinctive factor in determining eithercompetence.It was also discovered that there was a high, significant and positiverelationship between these two competences (r=.92) and also emotional competencewas a significant predictor of professional personality traits (r2=.86). The correlationbetween emotional competence and the subcomponents of professinal personalitytraits, motivational interaction, enthusiasm and dedication to teaching, fairness andrespect and lastly reflective practice, was found to be high, significant and positive.Key words: Personality, Personality traits, Emotional intelligence, Emotionalcompetence
