The role of portfolio assessment in the evaluation process of anatolian fine arts high school students' proficiency in art

The goal of this study is to determine the methods which are used to assess and evaluate students? art proficiency in studio classes of Anatolian Fine Arts High School and to evaluate the contributions of portfolio assessment to art learning and its practicability in assessment and evaluation.This study is conducted with 9th grade students (two dimension art studio) and 11th grade students (graphic design) and qualitative research method is used. In this study, within the framework of typically case sampling. The participants are composed of 46 students-25 of them are 9th grade two dimension art studio students and 21 of them are 11th grade graphic design students- and five teachers. Researcher is one of the teachers as a participant observer. Practice or application period has taken fifteen weeks.The data is collected through interviews, which are made with students and teachers, observation and portfolio records. The data is explained by the help of content analysis. The reliability and validity of data is provided by the help of three experts in this field.As a result of the study, it is concluded that current assessment and evaluation techniques are inefficient in detailed and real monitoring and evaluation of the students and the programme. As a consequence, after applying portfolio method in art studio classes, it is observed that portfolio evaluation provides opportunities to detailed evaluation and supports the learning process, introduces students their own learning styles, provides examples about what they are able to do in their own class works in terms of being productive, critical and having cultural and aesthetic point of views. The quality of data which is collected by students, has mentioned the student?s quality in art learning. All things considered, it is suggested that portfolio assessment can be used effectively with a good instruction and planning.
