Investigation of the relationship between mother father adolescent relationships and family functioning from a school social work perspective

The purpose of this research is to examine the effect of family functioning on mother-father-adolescent relationship in family, adolescence characteristics and school context. Mixed research model is used for this purpose. In accordance with this, data were obtained from adolescents through quantitative research methods through applying mother-father-adolescent relationship and family functioning scales ; qualitative data were obtained from the parents through the semistructured interviews prepared by the researcher. While evaluating quantitative data, regression, t-test and ANOVA analysis methods were used; and content analysis method was used in interpreting qualitative data. The quantitative and qualitative findings revealed that there is a mutually significant relationship between motherfather- adolescent relationships and family functioning. It has been determined that mother relationships and father relationships and some of the subscales of the family functioning scale have significant differences according to adolescents' age group, parents' marital status, mother's educational status, family type, school type and mothers' professions. There were also significant differences in application to the counselling service, parental attitudes perceived by adolescents, and feelings towards their families. It has also been found that the systems surrounding the family (school, relatives, environment, friends, siblings, etc.) have an impact on mother-father - adolescent relationships and family functioning. It has been determined that parents and adolescents are seeking solutions to the problems they are experiencing, and that one of these solutions is providing counseling to them through schools. At this point, these requests of adolescents and their parents were evaluated within the scope of school social work and the resulting conclusion was presented as suggestions.
