Examine the parents point of views which are concerned in the awareness of their gifted children

ABSTRACT This research has been conducted with an aim of determining the awareness of the parents about the gifted children. The sampling of the research has been presenting the cosmos. The scope of the research covers the parents of children from the 6 science & art centers among which there are students studying at the 2nd and 3rd classes ranging from 8 to 9 in age from a total of 21 science & art centers throughout Turkey. A questionnaire form has been devised by the researcher, to be applied to the parents of those students studying at the science & art center corresponding to the aim of the research. In the analysis of the data S.P.S.S. for Windows package program has been used. Results derived from the research are as follows in brief terms: 66 % of the parents of the gifted children at Bilsem are determined to have been at the level of middle income. 51 % of their mothers and 70 % their fathers at the level of M. A. education, 64 % of the mothers and 88% of the fathers at the level of middle income employment, 90 % of the parents have had 1-2 children and 70 % of their first children are determined to be gifted children. The genders of the gifted children at Bilsem have been equal in number, the stature and weight at birth of 73 % have been normal and the process of toddling of 59 % has been finished before the first 12th month and language competence have been evolved earlier than the normal process. It has also been determined that the parents first detected the gift of the children at Bilsem in the ratio of 46 % children and then 1 8 % of them took the children to the counseling research center and 21 % of them didn't take the children anywhere. It has been, on the other hand, determined that the primary school teachers have oriented the gifted children to the science & art center in the ratio of 75 % and 54 % of the families applied to the Bilsem pointed out the reasons of their application as the lack of efficiency in education, and 88 % pointed out that the education imparted to the children at Bilsem responded to the requirements of their children. mIt has been ascertained that during the observations-related with the social, personal, cognitive development, which are effective in the families' discernment of their children's being gifted- there have been found some meaningful differences (p<.05) among the mother's age, cognitive evolution features, the father's age and the social development features, the income level of the family and cognitive evolution features (p<.05). It was determined that there have been differences between the evolution features which were observed in the children of the families and the fields of mental and art education at Bilsem.
