Wine production and the cult of Dionysos in the Ancient Greek world

This study aims to examine the process of wine production in the ancient Greek world and its relationship with the cult of Dionysos from archaeological, mythological, and sociocultural perspectives. Based on the understanding that wine production in ancient Greek society was more than a mere economic activity and rather a material representation of a divine cycle, each stage of production from grape harvesting to crushing, fermentation, blending, and consumption is analyzed within ritualistic and symbolic contexts. The framework of the study is constructed at the intersection of mythology, archaeology, and iconography. The research adopts qualitative methods, analyzing ancient Greek literary texts, period-specific ceramic and architectural remains, as well as depictions of cultic scenes. The regions of Attica, Thasos, Delos, and Crete, which are closely associated with wine production, have been selected as the focal areas of investigation. The findings reveal that the stages of wine production closely mirror the myth of Dionysos' death and rebirth; each technical process such as crushing, fermenting, clarifying, and diluting bears mythological, ritualistic, and ethical meanings. The sites of production, rather than being ordinary economic units, have been transformed into symbolic spaces where the immanence of the god is manifested. In particular, symposia and Dionysian festivals are interpreted as collective rituals in which the divine power of wine was communally experienced. In conclusion, wine in ancient Greece functioned both as the material embodiment of Dionysos and as a symbolic mediator in the relationship between society, nature, and the divine. The production process was not merely technical but constituted a sacred cycle. Within this context, wine production evolved into a cultural phenomenon representing the god's descent to earth, the individual's contact with the divine, and the community's cyclical renewal through seasonal rites.
