Abstract (EN)

Human beings are the only creatures endowed with the ability to express their emotions and thoughts in the most direct and eloquent manner. In this process of expression, in addition to plain narration, it is indispensable to resort to literary devices in order to add beauty and impact to speech. The Arabic language, in particular, is highly conducive to enriching discourse with brilliance through various rhetorical devices, even in daily conversations. In the Qur'an, the primary source of Arabic language and literature, as well as in the Hadiths of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), literary devices such as literal and figurative expressions, similes, brevity, elaboration, parallelism, and especially metaphor, are extensively employed. To understand these devices—and thus the Qur'an and other Arabic literary texts—the science of balāghah (rhetoric) was developed. Balāghah comprises three main disciplines: maʿānī (semantics), bayān (clarity of expression), and badīʿ (embellishment). Numerous works have been written in this field. Among the most important classical and modern Arabic sources are al-Balāghat al-Wāḍiḥa, al-Jawāhir al-Balāghah, al-Balāghat al-ʿArabiyya, Dalīl al-Balāghat al-ʿArabiyya, and Muʿjam al-Balāghat al-ʿArabiyya. In addition, Turkish works such as Belâgat, Kur'ân Edebiyatı, Arap Edebiyatında Edebi Sanatlar, and Belâgat ve Telhîsu'l-Miftâh (the Turkish translation of Telhîs) serve as significant resources in this field. Collectively, these works reveal the depth of Arabic literary arts and the systematic structure of the science of balāghah.
