Abstract (EN)
Today, foreign language learning has become very important. Especially in Turkey, learning Arabic as a second foreign language is in high demand due to the commercial, political or cultural relations developed with Arab countries in recent years. However, despite great efforts in foreign language teaching in Turkey, foreign languages are still not fully learned. Especially students have some difficulties in communicating in a foreign language. This situation is also observed in Arabic language teaching. It has been observed that although students spend a lot of effort, time and money to learn Arabic, they have serious problems especially in speaking skills and have difficulty in communicating in Arabic. From this point of view, this thesis investigates the factors that negatively affect the learning of Arabic speaking skills in general and the effect of social status, psychological status and cultural differences on speaking skills in particular. It was tried to reveal whether these factors have a negative effect on the student's speaking skills, and if so, how they affect Arabic speaking skills. For this purpose, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 20 university students studying Arabic at certain universities in Istanbul. The data obtained were analyzed by descriptive analysis method. As a result of the research, 10 different codes were reached in four different categories that negatively affect students' speaking skills. The first category is cultural factors. In this category; cultural difference and dialect codes were reached. The second category is psychological factors. Psychological factors were identified as lack of self-efficacy, forgetfulness, anxiety and feeling of shyness. The third category is social factors. Social factors include receiving negative reactions in the educational environment, being affected by the society and being excluded. The fourth and final category includes other factors. Other factors were identified as difficulty in transferring, lack of practice and lack of exposure to the language.
